Unseen Beatles Sgt Pepper album artwork to sell at Sotheby’s

fool.JPGImage Enlarger

Snippets:

The unused artwork, by Dutch art collective The Fool, is expected to sell for more than $100,000 during an online auction which begins this week.

“…The Beatles’ roadie, Mal Evans, brought John and Paul to our studio in St Stephen’s Gardens,” said Marijke Koger, one of the founding members of the group.

“They had seen my Saville Theatre programme cover for Hendrix and The Who and were intrigued by the artwork. They blew their minds over the ‘Wonderwall’ Simon [Posthuma] and I had painted in 1966 on an armoire in polychrome psychedelic imagery, as well as others paintings and artwork.”

Having been introduced to LSD in 1965, the Beatles were becoming well-versed in psychedelic imagery, and they felt The Fool’s work captured the spirit of the age.

In return, the group created a vivid dreamscape filled with flowing water, towering mountains, green foliage and colourful birds such as parrots and peacocks, all surrounding a blazing sunset.

However, the style of the artwork didn’t sit well with Blake’s cover, or the faux-Edwardian imagery McCartney had originally envisioned, and in the end the band rejected the painting.

That's a really awesome picture, but I think they made the right choice. The Sgt Pepper cover is one of my favorites. a-hard-days-night-george-9

Reminds me of the inside cover to Eat A Peach

"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"

-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues

"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"

-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

Sotheby's put together a nice little short about the alternate gatefold image:

Don't know what happened at auction as, although bidding closed, the catalogue entry for it doesn't reveal whether it sold, and if it did what it sold for...

Maybe Ringo or Paul bought it and want it kept quiet.

As well as the Beatles I'm also a big Laurel and Hardy fan and I saw a discussion online where L&H fans were wondering why Stan Laurel is on the Sgt Pepper cover but there's no Oliver Hardy. Some thought the face to the right of Laurel is a young Hardy but I think it's Fatty Arbuckle (?).

Any idea why Hardy wasn't included? It's like Lennon without McCartney.

Why they are sandwiching surrealist artist Richard Lindner is anyone's guess. I'll ascribe it to Beatley humor, though.

Although I recall hearing that Jesus wasn't used because of some legal issue at the time.

Yep. I think they actually went ahead and made the cardboard cutouts, but when they were doing the shoot someone (I'm not sure who) went "You can't put them on here!" So they didn't. And later they had to take some people off for various reasons-- I think one of them was Gandhi, and they just covered him up with another palm frond as he was under the palm tree.

Love one another.

The image often mistaken for Fatty Arbuckle, @Leppo, is the head of an Oliver Hardy figurine that's owned by Peter Blake:

Thanks @Ron Nasty . Sorry for the late reply. That's good that he wasn't left off. It does actually look like a much younger Oliver Hardy when he made solo silent films.
