It did become largely standard practice in the 70s in the USA, but in the UK bands continued the “singles separate” practice up well into the ’80s (and beyond, for all I know.)

I remember seeing “Back To The Egg ” in record stores in ’79 (the year I seriously began hanging out in record stores for hours staring at inventory) and being surprised that it didn’t have “Goodnight Tonight” (or “Daytime Nighttime Suffering”) included, despite being a hit just months earlier. An album’s first single was usually released a few weeks in advance of the album back then.

Granted, the Stones’ last non-album single was also their last ’60s single, “Honky Tonk Women” (though they’d periodically release non-album B-sides all the way through Bridges to Babylon).  The Who released their last non-album single in late ’72 (“Relay”).  The Kinks released only 2 non-album singles after the ’60s (“Preservation” and “Father Christmas”).  John’s last non-album single was “Happy Xmas (War Is Over);” “Back Off, Boogaloo” was Ringo’s.  “Bangla Desh” was the only non-album single George ever released.  Maybe Paul was just too prolific to leave so many tracks in the vaults at the time.  ahdn_paul_02

Hmm. I sadly think ‘Only A Northern Song ‘ was not good enough a track for inclusion on ‘Sgt Pepper ‘ and harrison kind of knew it. By all accounts he was not fully engaged with the pepper sessions annoying mccartney who told others he felt george was not pulling his weight during the recording…. Which again heightened the tension between the two men that had continued from ‘Rubber Soul ‘ (where macca had given harrison a torturous time with the guitar overdubs)

Eventually george got ‘Within You Without You ‘ together near the end of the sessions for the album and it’s a very good track indeed, but i get the vibe harrison was sulking a fair bit during the early sessions. On Anthology 2 A Day In The Life ‘ you can hear what sounds like harrison (with little to no involvement on said track) playing ‘northern song’ opening line on the organ before its curtailed by an early take of ‘A Day In The Life ‘.

Mebbes i’m off the mark but i can just about see him in the corner while this amazing track is happening, getting more and more cheesed off.

I’m ok with it not being on Sgt Pepper and kind of wish the Yellow Sub album was an EP without the george-martin stuff on side 2. blue-meanie

The following people thank Bongo for this post:

I don’t mind the instrumentals on side 2. My beef is that they are not tracked in the order they appear in the film. I always found that odd.

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

a-hard-days-night-john-1a-hard-days-night-john-1I think this should have been on Magical Mystery Tour . Although it would have went well on Pepper too, I think MMT was the perfect fit for it, maybe right after “Flying ”

Only A Northern Song wouldn’t work on the album. Within You Without You is much better.

Sgt. Pepper is the first Beatles album where the flow is key, i’d hate to have it any other way.

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

I’d argue that Revolver and (to a lesser extent) Rubber Soul also have pretty important track-listings.

I’d even argue it’s key in Pepper. It is key for the two first songs and maybe good morning, good morning and the Sgt. Pepper ‘s reprise… the other songs are not connected to each other in any way.

And that’s okay, and how a ‘live show’ concept should be IMO. The middle section is the main performance before everything gets wrapped up.

Easily the least accomplished thing they recorded during the Pepper sessions …… So no

What is happening? And tell me how you've been.
