For ages I’d always read that the mono version was the superior and definitive version of the album, but all I ever had growing up in the 80s and 90s was my parent’s 60s stereo version vinyl and my 1987-issue stereo CD. When I got the Beatles in Mono box a while ago the mono version blew me away and I can’t listen to the stereo any more.  It was like hearing the album for the first time again!

What is everyone else’s preferred version? Honestly, since I’ve gotten the mono box set, those are the only mixes I ever listen to any more of those first 10 albums.

Um… isn’t there another thread exactly like this? And if this is the same one, why aren’t the other posts showing up?

Also known as Egg-Rock, Egg-Roll, E-George, Eggy, Ravioli, Eggroll Eggrolli...

There are another couple of threads like this one – though one started with a specific about how mono and stereo differed as ways of reproducing sound and turned into a which is a better. I will just say, as I have said in other places, The Beatles finished mix of The Beatles (White Album ) was the stereo and not the mono.

I’ll generally go with the mono mixes for all tracks except “Good Morning, Good Morning” — mostly due to the fact that it’s slightly longer due to a few more seconds of animal sounds.  a-hard-days-night-john-1  I’m a bit torn on “She’s Leaving Home ,” though; while the mono mix doesn’t sound as dreary as the stereo mix, but it also almost sounds a little too… upbeat, given its lyric.  a-hard-days-night-paul-4

But despite finally hearing it in mono in its entirety, I still think it’s their most overrated album.  a-hard-days-night-paul-11

I prefer the mono mixes for all of the first 10 albums where both mixes are available. No question.

I totally agree, except that it’s the stereo I like better! (Actually there are many tracks where I enjoy both mono and stereo mixes for different aspects.)

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.
