@Here Comes The Sun , I am curious as to why you have Think For Yourself as #3 in the ranking of the songs on this album and have it (along with Girl) as your favorite songs on the album. How do you distinguish between "ranking" and "favorite"? Making that distinction (best vs favorite) is an age-old question on the forum.

Rubber Soul just might be (might be, mind you) my favourite Beatles album -- it's definitely up there along side REVOLVER and Abbey Road -- and John Lennon 's songs here are among the best of his career.   It's really hard to rank my top six songs on this album, since they're all about even in my ears.. but let's give it a go:

1)  "Norwegian Wood " -- John's acoustic intro, George's chiming sitar, those fantastic Lennon/McCartney harmonies -- and first and foremost, John's lead vocal -- the whole exotic feel of this song is captivating

2) "Nowhere Man " -- once again, that Lennon voice draws me in every time, Paul & George's backing (especially George) -- the lustrous double-lead guitar solo and George's little sonic "ping" at the end -- beautiful song

3) "If I Needed Someone " -- George Harrison emerges as a real songwriter, able to stand along side Lennon & McCartney -- great vocal harmonies (especially Lennon's -- he very nearly steals this song) -- and that chiming 12-string Rick of George's -- sometimes I think this is actually the best song on the album, but today it's #3.

4) "In My Life " -- a song so good both Lennon & McCartney claimed authorship of its melody -- John at his most introspective -- George Martin's baroque piano solo -- there are also times I might rank this #1 on this remarkable album

5) "I'm Looking Through You " -- Paul's best song on the album, with unusually bitter lyrics from him -- I like the guitar strums in this song -- and I prefer the version on the US Rubber Soul album, with its false start (maybe because that's the version I grew up with)

6) "Girl" -- another exotic-sounding John Lennon song, this time with a southern European flavour, compete with a Greek guitar break (in one magazine, George Martin said that Harrison played a bouzouki on it, but I wonder if that's true) -- and rather haunting lyrics

7) "The Word " -- I love the guitars in this song, especially George Harrison 's lead

8) "Drive My Car " -- maybe this song should rank higher than 8, but I don't know what to bump down -- great Motown feel to it, and Paul McCartney apparently played the note-bending solo -- and of course his bass-playing is outstanding (on this, and pretty much every other track on the album)

9) "Think For Yourself " -- great groove to this song, and Paul's fuzz bass is awesome, especially in headphones -- I like the growl in George's voice in this song, but the harmonies sound a little off to me

10) "You Won't See Me " -- I like this song -- but there are so many other tracks on this album I like better -- Paul still sounds a little cranky

11) "Wait " -- I like the tone pedal guitar played by George -- but otherwise this song is a bit "ordinary" by Beatles standards

12) "Michelle " -- I know many many people love this romantic McCartney ballad but it doesn't do a whole lot for me, although I do like the guitar playing -- John's strumming and George's solo (composed by George Martin) -- it's pretty, but -- well -- I guess just not to my taste

13) "Run For Your Life " -- it's funny -- musically, I like this song a lot -- the beat, the rhythm guitar and especially George's C&W lead -- it's just the vicious lyric that spoils it for me

14) "What Goes On " -- sorry Ringo, but I cringe when I hear this -- Ringo warbles it pretty well, and the guitars aren't bad -- but the lyrics are dumb!  I don't think this song is a whole lot better than "If You Got Trouble" which was rejected during the HELP sessions

I've got nothing to say, but it's okay..

Believe it or not, Anne Murray says (in her autobiography) that John Lennon actually approached her one time in the 70's and told her he thought her version of this song was one of the best Beatle covers he'd ever heard!  I actually don't mind her version (but I wouldn't say it's better than the original!!)

Folk are strange. 'Run For Your Life ', 'What Goes On ' and 'You Won't See Me ' coming near the bottom of any ranking is a travesty.

'You Won't See Me ' is my favourite Paul song on the album.

And I have no idea what folk hear in 'Nowhere Man ' for it to be rated so highly. I've always found it to be monotonous, slow and overlong.

Guess I'm the weird one.

As I have mentioned elsewhere on occasion Nowhere Man is one of my favourite Beatles songs; what was said above is part of the reason:

1. In My Life : Just a straight up masterpiece. Top of the Beatles catalog.

2. Nowhere Man : The vocal harmonies are out of this world. This song hits me like a bag of bricks.

3. Drive My Car : Catchy, fun and a great album opener.

4. Norwegian Wood : So fun to play on guitar! The sitar really makes the song.

5. If I Needed Someone : George's first excellent song. Nice little riff.

6. You Won't See Me : Ugh those background vocals are crazy. This album has so many good harmonies.

7. I'm Looking Through You : Fun song, I like the little opening riff.

8. Wait : That percussion!

9. The Word : Catchy and fun.

10. Think For Yourself : The bassline is what makes it awesome.

11. Run For Your Life : Good song but the lyrics ruin it.

12. Michelle : Not to fond of this song but it's growing on me.

13. Girl : Not bad but defiantly not one of my favorites from John.

14. What Goes On : Cheesy and fun but out of place on the album.

@ewe2 @IMDeWalrus - I don't run into references to Anne Murray very often, so it's unusual to have 2 in one week. Micky Dolenz (The Monkees drummer) tweeted this picture on Halloween. It appears these guys called themselves The Hollywood Vampires and spent most evenings drinking at clubs on the Sunset Strip. This picture was taken after an Anne Murray concert at The Troubadour on Thanksgiving 1973. Group includes John, Anne, Harry Nilsson, Alice Cooper & Micky. I think Ringo was part of the group as well, but appears to be missing in action that night. a-hard-days-night-ringo-12

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

This is going to be hard. Most of the songs on this album are almost equally good, I think. Here is my list:

  1. Nowhere Man - I am a little surprised I put this one in the top, but today I think this is where it belongs. Another day I might put any of the top 12 songs in the top.
  2. I'm Looking Through You
  3. Drive My Car
  4. In My Life
  5. Think For Yourself
  6. If I Needed Someone
  7. What Goes On
  8. Norwegian Wood
  9. Girl
  10. Wait
  11. Run For Your Life
  12. The Word
  13. You Won't See Me - I like it, but it feels like it goes on for too long.
  14. Michelle - It's a pretty good song, but I think they should have worked on it longer. It sounds like they were in a hurry when they recorded it (same with You Won't See Me ).

ah! after looking at these lists i see Michelle is being criminal underrated. Its one of Mccartney's bests songs in my opinion. It would probably place 2nd for me behind Girl, in my life, Norwegian Wood , and Nowhere Man tied for first.. Rubber Soul is so good.

I've always felt that Nowhere Man goes on too long.

I used to love You Wont See Me but over the last few months I've began to feel it's overly long too.
