Ringo Starr – Vertical Man (1998)

Recorded: March 1997 – May 1998
Producers: Mark Hudson, Ringo Starr

Released: 16 June 1998 (US), 3 August 1998 (UK)

Vertical Man is Ringo Starr ’s eleventh solo studio album, and his first since 1992’s Time Takes Time.

In the interim Starr had toured extensively with his All-Starr Band, and had worked on The Beatles’ Anthology project. For his return to the studio, he enlisted a number of guest musicians including Paul McCartney , George Harrison , Brian Wilson, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Steven Tyler, Alanis Morissette, and Ozzy Osbourne.

The majority of Vertical Man was written by Starr, Steve Dudas, Mark Hudson, and Dean Grakal, and The Roundheads were the core backing band. See more

I received my copy of Vertical Man in the mail yesterday and it had one of those dark gray CD trays that usually comes with a CD where the reverse of the inlay is blank white.  I happened to notice a spot of colour through the hole where the CD sits and removed the tray; lo and behold the reverse of the paper inlay has lots of cool little pictures.

So, I replaced the gray plastic tray with a clear one and the CD looks much better.

Does anyone else have this CD? – If so I’m curious as to whether your CD tray is one of the opaque ones or is transparent.

I hope this is a little clearer than mud and that I have got the terms (such as inlay etc.) correct.

Don’t own it, but here’s a picture that seems to agree with most…

^ Ah, thanks, yes – that answers the question – it has a transparent case so you can see the pictures.  My copy of the CD was from ebay so the original owner must have used the transparent case for another CD, or replaced a damaged one with the only one they had at hand.  The pictures carry on right across the inlay.

I wonder if Ringo and his co-authors of “Minefield” from the Vertical Man album (1998) were influenced by Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” from 1989?

Start listening at :51 (to about 1:04). You will hear the sound that is at the beginning of Strawberry Fields Forever .

And a bonus for @AppleScruffJunior and the other Georgettes – the picture of George at that point in the video is really cute. Actually, the pictures throughout this video are GREAT!

George plays on another song on Vertical Man as well! (Some of you may be thinking “where have I heard that before?”, well it was playing in the background when Dhani was talking about George in the LITMW documentary)
