I decided to go on a task of continuing and updating list of every post averaged in the thread to create a decent ranking of the tracks off every album. In this case Revolver . I clarify my process and rules below.

Averaging process and rules:

A pretty classic averaging system; it goes basically by giving the maximum amount of points to the top track on every post (in this case 13) and as the list progresses into the “worst” tracks each track gets one point less. The last track gets no points. For this to apply the post must have the 14 Revolver songs ranked.

IMPORTANT: if you think one of your rankings might have one of these ambiguous qualities that might disqualify it and you want to be counted in the averaging DON’T edit it; post it again with more detail, otherwise I won’t be able to subtract the points and add them again and it won’t be counted anyway.a-hard-days-night-paul-11

Particular cases:

-NO. 1- Sometimes if there is a track missing but there’s a written clarification, it can be counted. In the case of Abbey Road , for instance, some people don’t count Her Majesty . In that case I count the post and give no points to Her Majesty only if there is a written statement of why its missing. If one track is missing and the post doesn’t have any written clarification then it is considered a mistake and therefore disqualified.

-NO. 2- The tracklist considered is taken out of the Wikipedia/RYM/Discogs “official” tracklists. This means those who rank the Abbey Road Medley as a whole don’t get counted unless they clarify by writing that the tracks separately also rank that way, same with any variation of the sort.

-NO. 3- If a person implies to a previous post that “that would exactly be [their] ranking” and don’t post any ranking themselves, then the points of the first person will be added a second time in behalf of the second person.

-NO. 4- Only one person each ranking. If you posted several times your changes, only the last one will be counted (unless it has any mistakes, missing tracks, etc., in that case then the last one that has no issues will be the one counted).

-NO. 5- The rankings are considered given the numbers apply to them, “1” universally represents the top spot. Unless there is a written statement that clarifies it’s the other way around, this is the way it will be counted.

-NO. 6- If there are no numbers on the ranking and no written clarification it could go either way. At first I used to think the ones at the top were the number 1 spot but in some cases it just isn’t that way. So I decided I’ll just grab the worst rated track up to that point and I see if it falls on the top half or the bottom half. If it falls on the top half I’ll consider the bottom half the top spot and if it falls on the bottom half then I’ll consider the top half the top spot. It might be unfair at times as it might reverse someones’ ranking if they are unlucky by voting positively a previously negatively voted track, but in the grand scheme of things I think it was mostly accurate. In case that the number of tracks is odd (A Hard Day’s Night , Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour , Yellow Submarine ‘s Side B & Abbey Road ) and the worst rated track falls in precisely the middle spot then I just take the second to worst rated and judge as to where that one falls.

-NO. 7- If there are “ties” in someone’s ranking their ranking can still be counted but it won’t represent exactly the ties in the overall averaging. If there is still a list-like format then I go from the bottom to the top adding points just like usual, so tied tracks can get different scores but just differing in one single point or two (unless you tie like 5 tracks together), but I think it’s more fair than not letting those people participate at all. It might seem unfair but if the tied tracks were to get the same points, it would increasingly leave an averaging gap between those songs so it’s mathematically better to just stick to the original adding process.

-NO. 8- If there are two tracks that are “tied” then I will just give more points to the one that is named first, regardless of descriptions, just to keep the whole thing going. Unless there’s a specific written clarification of why one of the tracks is better or more of a favourite, then I’ll just give more points to the one named first.

-NO. 9- However, if there’s a tie between three tracks (or more) then that post will no longer be counted unless the list has a specific ranking format in which case see item “-NO. 7-“.

-NO. 10- I guess that if someone doesn’t want to be counted in the averaging he can ask me not to count him in but I hope nobody does that so we get his opinion tooahdn_john_08_gif

All of these rules are up to debate if someone disagrees with part of the judgement. I’m sure we can reach an agreement if they are considered questionable.

  1. Eleanor Rigby – One of Paul’s best.  Unique sounding, great melody and lyrics.  A sad story but one with a good message.
  2. Tomorrow Never Knows – Their most psychadelic song.  Lots of energy.  Nice electronic additions.  Odd drumming pattern goes with the song well.
  3. Here, There, Everywhere – One of Paul’s most smooth tender and smoothing melodies.
  4. Love You To – Very unique psychadelic Indian song
  5. I’m Only Sleeping — A catchy mellow passive-aggressive tune from Lennon.
  6. Yellow Submarine — It’s a very good Ringo song.  Aquatic, catchy, fun, unique and full of Ringo’s jovial attitude.
  7. Tax Man — Their most overtly political song.  Lyrics are done perfectly.
  8. For No One
  9. Doctor Robert – I have a doctor named Robert.  He doesn’t give me speed though.
  10. She Said She Said — It’s a nice catchy Lennon song.  Kind of old school.  Good drumming by Ringo.
  11. And Your Bird Can Sing — What the lyrics mean?  Who knows.
  12. Got To Get You Into My Life — Would’ve been better if the whole song had a harder edge like the last third of it.
  13. Good Day Sunshine — Not a bad song, but would have been better for something like Sgt Pepper .  I don’t think it belongs in Revolver thematically.
  14. I Want To Tell You — Standard.  Not bad.  But Lennon’s singing just doesn’t mesh with this one as well I would have expected.

I’d like to know @pepperland.

@Derek_Francis; John’s singing on ‘I Want To Tell You ‘ wont mesh as George as the lead vocalist and also wrote it.

 

My rankings.

  1. Tomorrow Never Knows – Its just way over the weirdness scales; that John went weirder with ‘I Am The Walrus ‘ is incredulous. Take 1 is immense if not as good.
  2. And Your Band Can Sing – The guitars and power of the track are incredible. 
  3. She Said, She Said – Another where the power of the track is incredible; Ringo’s drumming is brilliant
  4. Here, There And Everywhere – Paul’s vocal and the backing harmonies are quite possibly the most gorgeous on any Beatles record.
  5. For No One – Brilliant in how perfect Paul expresses the sadness and emptiness; the French Horn is such a great touch.
  6. I Want To Tell You – The lyrics are amazing and I love the fade in.
  7. Love You To – The intro is mind-blowing, love how it splutters into life and then tears off at a thousand miles per hour.
  8. Eleanor Rigby – Never cared for it until the 2015 ‘1+’ remix. Moves it up the list as it finally works after years of “meh!”.
  9. Good Day Sunshine – Bright and sunny pulls it thru. Best moment is when John makes Paul laugh.
  10. Doctor Robert – Fine when placed where it is; outside its ok.
  11. Yellow Submarine – Can be enjoyable in the right moment.
  12. Got To Get You Into My Life – Pleasant enough; best moment is when the guitar kicks in at the end.
  13. Taxman – Never understood why this is so popular.
  14. I’m Only Sleeping – Same as the above. John went for the tired feel in the song, fittingly, and because of that I just find it dull.

As seen from the above I can easily miss the first three tracks from ‘Revolver ‘ and have a great listening experience. Some Beatle forums would probably kick me off for being a heretic.

1. Eleanor Rigby . Strings without resonance, cold and stark lyrics. Paul at his absolute peak. More revolutionary than TNK.

2. I’m Only Sleeping . Dreamy, hazy, and surreal. The backwards guitar is not only cutting edge but one of the most satisfying sounds on the album.

3. Tomorrow Never Knows . A Lennon opus that sounds as progressive and avante guarde as it sounded in 1966.For No One . Heartbreaking lyrics on top of a moving French horn solo. A clavichord thrown in to seal this experimental chamber orchestra as pure genius.

4. For No One . Heartbreaking lyrics on top of a French horn solo, with a clavichord to turn this chamber orchestra piece into pure genius.

5. Here, There, and Everywhere. Only McCartney can make something so simple yet so mature. Astounding.

6. Got To Get You Into My Life . Paul was becoming the Beatles foremost songwriter 

7. Taxman . As searing and brutal a guitar solo you could ever hear.

8. Love You To . Simply stunning composition.

9.She Said She Said . Lennon alone with Harrison on the previous track are inventing acid rock. And Your Bird Can Sing . An epic guitar melody with electric harmonies and unique timbres.

10. And Your Bird Can Sing . A fantastic guitar melody with electric harmonies and unique timbres.

11. Yellow Submarine . Fits astoundingly well in this eclectic group of songs.

12. Good Day Sunshine . One of Paul’s best piano hooks.

13.  Doctor Robert . Another great guitar track by Lennon. With a harmonium underlying intricate harmony.

14. I Want To Tell You . Great lyrics. Just not on the same level as the other tracks.

Love the lyrics, drums and guitars. Superb!

2. Tomorrow Never Knows

I don’t think I need to comment on this one…

3. And Your Bird Can Sing

The guitar really drives the song. It almost goes in circles. 

4. Taxman

A faboulous opening-track! Pauls guitar solo is great and I like the count-in.

5. I’m Only Sleeping

I love the backward guitar!

6. For No One

Sad and beautiful melody. Love the horn-section. Makes me feel nostalgic for some reason.

7. Here There And Everywhere

A mellow and nice little song.

8. Doctor Robert

9. Love You To

Great tempo and energy. Moves like a Freight-train.

10. Eleanor Rigby

I used to adore this song, but I think i’ve heard it so many times now that some of the magic has gone away. I still appreciate it though.

11. Got To Get You Into My Life

Good track. Also Pauls vocals during the fade out is great!

12. Good Day Sunshine

13. I Want To Tell You

This line pops up in my mind from time to time: “But if I seem to act unkind its’ only me and not my mind”. I like the song.

14. Yellow submarine

My least favorite now, but I really enjoyed it as a small kid. All the sounds and other effects.

These rankings are totally based on my mood right now. No deep thought into musical quality, just how the track struck me at the time…

1) For No One

I can feel the lyrics on this track. Gets me every time.

2) I’m Only Sleeping

Chill vibes. Makes me feel mellow.

3) And Your Bird Can Sing

I dig it.

4) Eleanor Rigby

Need I say more? It’s poetry.

5) Got To Get You Into My Life

Yes, I do.

Splendid.

Upbeat. Feel good.

I Want To Tell You ” is one of my favorites, despite its low rating on these lists. Although I tried to rank the album myself and I found it damn near impossible. SO many good… great tracks. Best album ever.

Hmmmm…

This would prove to be very difficult indeed.a-hard-days-night-ringo-13Revolver isn’t exactly my favorite Beatles record (only my 5th favorite), but it’s such a strong bunch of songs that it’d be really hard to rank.  

Dr. Robert is my least favorite, I know that for sure.  As for the best song, it’s either For No One or Tomorrow Never Knows .  And Your Bird Can Sing would round out the top 3. 

@owenladner I also really like I Want To Tell You .  It’s easily my favorite of George’s songs from this albumahdn_george_08
