Mark Lewisohn was working to a tight deadline and I think he relied on John Barrett’s notes for a lot of the entries, rather than listening to absolutely everything (I might be wrong about this). When I met him a few years ago he said that book (the Complete Recording Sessions) is in desperate need of a revision, but he was far too busy on All These Years. He’s also said that the Winn books are a worthy successor, so I suspect that’s a more reliable source in many cases.

Thanks for the follow-up, Joe. It’s good to know that about Lewisohn, and the fact that he feels Winn’s books are “a worthy successor.” That makes me feel a lot better about taking Winn’s account (three players, one piano, on an overdub) over Lewisohn’s account.

Not a bit like Cagney.

Regarding my attempt to recreate Day Tripper : The dropout…the 2 versions I have don’t seem to have the dropout.

What drops out?  The hook or the backing guitar?  What time in the song?  I’m going on a midi file so the timing won’t be the same as the album but I can try.

The lead guitar playing the hook drops out at about 1:50, leaving only the bass to carry the riff.

From the What Goes On anomalies site:

1:40
The note progression that starts at 1:21 in the left channel (guitar) seems to cut off very abruptly at 1:40, as if excess was edited away.

1:50, 1:56, 2:32
There are three extremely noticeable dropouts near the end of the song. This is not on any earlier mixes of the same take, so it is quite likely that it happened during the mastering stage. Other mixes show a sound at 1:50 that was likely the reason for the dropout, and John’s misplaced “yeah” at 2:32, but one has to wonder if the cure wasn’t worse than the illness.

This is particularly true in the 2:32 case, since one can still hear the “yeah” as we plunge into the dropout. The dropout at 1:50 punches the sixth note of the riff out, 1:56 punches the first note of the riff out.

Not a bit like Cagney.

On the topic of It’s All Too Much , I need some help determining who played guitar on it and how many guitars are in the song, here are some theories for the instrumentation of this song:

1. What I think happened

Backing Track:

George Harrison : Lead Vocals, Hammond Organ

John Lennon : Lead Guitar (1965 Epiphone ES-230TD Casino)

Paul McCartney : Bass Guitar (1964 Rickenbacker 4001S)

Ringo Starr : Drums

Overdubs:

David Mason and 3 other uncredited session musicians: Trumpet

Paul Harvey: Bass Clarinet

2. What I would think happened if there is 2 guitars in the song

Backing Track:

George Harrison : Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar (1965 Epiphone ES-230TD Casino)

John Lennon : Rhythm Guitar (1965 Epiphone ES-230TD Casino)

Paul McCartney : Hammond Organ

Ringo Starr : Drums

Overdubs:

Paul McCartney : Bass Guitar (1964 Rickenbacker 4001S)

David Mason and 3 other uncredited session musicians: Trumpet

Paul Harvey: Bass Clarinet

3. What George thinks happened

Backing Track:

George Harrison : Lead Vocals, Hammond Organ

John Lennon : Bass Guitar (1966 Burns Nu-Sonic)

Paul McCartney : Lead Guitar (1962 Epiphone ES-230TD Casino)

Ringo Starr : Drums

Overdubs:

David Mason and 3 other uncredited session musicians: Trumpet

Paul Harvey: Bass Clarinet

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Great.  How long does the dropout last?

I’ve got nothing better to do so I thought I’d mention songs where a specific instrument model is confirmed and what source says that.

First of all, let’s get some obvious ones out of the way:

For every track released from the 1962 Love Me Do single to With The Beatles , Paul uses his 1961 Hofner 500/1.

For every track released from I Want To Hold Your Hand to Help !, Paul uses his 1963 Hofner 500/1.

Every track on Revolver , Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Yellow Submarine , as well as Paperback Writer , Rain , and Lady Madonna has Paul use his 1964 Rickenbacker 4001S.

If John and or George are playing a steel string acoustic guitar part on a song that was recorded anywhere from September 10, 1962 to July 1, 1964, they are using their Gibson J-160E’s.

If John and George are playing a classical guitar part, they are using a Ramirez unless otherwise specified.

If Paul is playing an acoustic guitar on any song released before 1968, he is using his Epiphone Texan.

If Paul is playing an acoustic guitar on a song from The Beatles or later, he is using his 1967 Martin D-28.

If Paul is playing an electric guitar part on a song that was released before 1967, he is using his 1962 Epiphone ES-230TD Casino.

Now for the fun stuff:

Contrary to popular belief, The Beatles actually used electric guitars to record the single version of Love Me Do , there are 2 reasons, I know this.

First of all, The Beatles didn’t have their Gibson Jumbos until 6 days after the session. Also, if you look at photographs taken during the session, you will see John’s Rickenbacker and George’s Grestch.

For From Me To You and Thank You Girl , they used their Gibson Jumbo acoustics plugged in.

On the song She Loves You , John uses his Gibson Jumbo plugged into a Vox combo amp while George uses his Gretsch, this is also the case for it’s B-side I’ll Get You .

George’s Rickenbacker 12 string can clearly be heard on A Hard Day’s Night , I Should Have Known Better , You Can’t Do That , the intro and outro to Eight Days A Week , and What You’re Doing .

According to Andy Babiuk’s The Beatles Gear, George uses his Gretsch Tennessean on Baby’s In Black and I Feel Fine , he also shows a picture of George recording Baby’s In Black using this instrument.

Help ! is the album we have the most confirmation on regarding specific instrument models, mainly due to George Martin’s handwritten notes:

According to these notes, as well as Babiuk confirming that John played his Framus 12-string acoustic on Help !, we can get this instrumentation list:

Help !:

John plays his Framus Hootenanny

The Night Before :

George plays Gretsch Tennessean for the rhythm track

Paul plays Epiphone Casino and George plays Fender Stratocaster for the solo

You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away :

John plays Framus and George plays Ramirez classical on backing track

George plays Framus during bridge as an overdub

I Need You :

George plays Ramirez classical on the backing track while Ringo plays drums on the back of John’s Gibson J-160E

George overdubs the electric guitar part with his Rickenbacker 360/12

Another Girl :

John plays his Fender Stratocaster while George plays his Gibson J-160E on the backing track

George overdubs an outro on his Gretsch Tennessean, which was later wiped

Paul overdubs the lead guitar using his Epiphone Casino

Ticket To Ride :

John plays Fender Stratocaster and George plays Rickenbacker 360/12 on backing track

George overdubs single note drones using Fender Stratocaster

Paul overdubs end of bridge fills and solo using Epiphone Casino

You Like Me Too Much :

George plays all guitars on this song, he uses his Gibson J-160E on the backing track and his Gretsch Tennessean for the solo

Tell Me What You See :

John uses his Fender Stratocaster

Yes It Is :

John plays rhythm guitar on his Ramirez classical guitar

George plays the lead parts using his Gretsch Tennessean

If You’ve Got Trouble :

John uses his Fender Stratocaster, George uses his Gretsch Tennessean, except for the solo where he uses his Fender Stratocaster, and Paul uses his Epiphone Casino

George Harrison confirms in a video interview that he played his Fender Stratocaster on both Nowhere Man and All You Need Is Love .

There is photographic evidence that John played a handmade Spanish classical guitar, George played the Framus 12-string and Paul played his Epiphone acoustic on the song Michelle .

As for the solo, both George’s Fender and Gretsch were there but because it’s more comfortable to play the solo without a capo and the Fender has a capo on it, I would guess that he used his Gretsch Tennessean.

I am going to stop here and carry on with this later.

I was originally going to give you proper explanations, but since the page refreshed on me when I was almost done, I’m just going to list the songs and instruments:

George used his Fender to play the rhythm guitar to Taxman

John used his orange Gretsch, Paul used his Epiphone, and George used his Burns bass on the backing track of Paperback Writer . Later, George overdubbed fills with his Gibson SG and Paul used his Rickenbacker bass to replace George’s bass track

Paul used his Fender Esquire on Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band

George used his Fender Stratocaster on Fixing A Hole

John used a classical guitar on The Fool On The Hill

George used his Fender on All You Need Is Love

Hey Bulldog uses this instrumentation:

John Lennon : Lead Vocals, Piano, Epiphone Casino, Gibson SG

Paul McCartney : Rickenbacker bass, Backing Vocals, Tambourine

George Harrison : Gibson SG

Ringo Starr : Drums, vocals

According to Beatles Book Monthly, John uses his Gibson acoustic on Glass Onion and Sexy Sadie

The same magazine also claims that George used his Gibson Les Paul on Sexy Sadie and Not Guilty

George also used his Gibson Les Paul on Martha My Dear and Savoy Truffle

John used a Fender 6 string bass on Back In The USSR , Rocky Raccoon , and Helter Skelter

Paul uses a Fender Bass on Long Long Long

George uses a Fender and Paul uses a Lowery organ on Revolution

John uses his Epiphone and George uses his Gibson on Come Together

According to Beatles Book Monthly, George uses a Fender Jazz Bass on Maxwell’s Silver Hammer and that he uses his Gibson and Paul uses his Epiphone

Two Of Us has Paul using his Martin acoustic, George playing his Fender Telecaster, and John playing an acoustic guitar

Dig A Pony , I’ve Got A Feeling , and One After 909 contain John on Epiphone, George on Fender, and Paul on Hofner bass

Let It Be and The Long And Winding Road have George on Fender and John on Fender 6 string bass

For You Blue has George on Gibson acoustic and John on Hofner slide guitar

If you want an explanation for one of these statements, just ask why.

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Paul started using a blonde fender bassman in 1965 on Rubber Soul as his bass amp, as you’ve noted. I’ve read that John and George used this amp for guitar as well. You don’t have it listed that they used it for guitar though. Do we know if they did indeed use it for guitar? I think George’s estate owns it today.

It’s a possibility it was used on some songs but the guitars on Rubber Soul sound very treble-y for the most part so my guess would be that they used a Vox amp with a Fender Stratocaster for the majority of the album although it’s possible that Michelle used the Bassman for the solo.

Sorry, to be clear, I meant that they supposedly used it for guitar throughout the rest of their albums, not Rubber Soul specifically. Here is a bit from an article referring to this:

“The amp was first used by Paul McCartney as his main bass amp from 1965 to mid 1967 (he did use a Vox during this time but not as much as the Bassman). In 1966 and 1967 John Lennon and George Harrison shared it (sometimes playing their guitars through the amp at the same time) and from early 1967 George Harrison took it over as his main amp.”

Hi Dark Overlord

Your list is great, fantastic.

I only have 1 correction for that list: Paul played his Höfner 500/1 bass in I’m Only Sleeping

Cheers!

According to these photos taken from the session, Paul used a Rickenbacker bass.

Off topic, I think this might be the longest page on the forum given the enormity of DO’s list and the lack of a spoiler.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Well, I think it’d be interesting to know what instruments were used for each song, but I am completely flummoxed by this thread. There seems to be no unanimous agreement (understandable, when none of us were there) and the format isn’t kind to the eyes.

Yeah, i used to be obsessed with this stuff but looking back, this stuff is incredibly trivial and hard to prove. I’d focus on post #110 since it only covers the albums and therefore uses very little guesswork.
