Honestly i couldn’t care less, as a Beatles fan, about AI generated Beatles songs.

On the other hand it’s just insane what can be made with technology nowadays.

Now And Then (AI completed)

Not so keen on this one, although I think the slide guitar is very reminiscent of George

God Only Knows (AI)

https://youtu.be/XFV7k3n_LN0

According to this report the vocals are genuinely Paul, extracted from an audience bootleg tape of a Brian Wilson concert where he appeared as a guest, isolated, cleaned up significantly and dropped over the record after the original vocals had been removed. If it can do this that shows the potential of AI and what could happen with The Star Club tapes, the Stowe concert, Granada TV’s ‘Some Other Guy’ performance, and the early BBC session stuff that only exists as poor off-air recordings.

This one just blows my mind – It Don’t Comes Easy, with each of ‘The Beatles’ taking their turn:

AI rewrites Hey Jude https://americansongwriter.com…..he-result/

Turns out, getting AI to rewrite “Hey Jude ” was more of a challenge than we expected.

The first time the technology tried generating a re-written version, it took out the name “Jude” and kept the lyrics exactly the same: Hey [name] don’t make it bad.

The second time it tried generating a re-written version of “Hey Jude ,” it added the name “Lucy” in the place of “Jude” and then kept the lyrics exactly the same. Hey, if it ain’t broke…

The third time was the charm, it seems, and the technology was able to come up with something original.

“Hey Alex” by The Byte-les

Hey there, Alex, don’t you fret,
Take a deep breath and don’t forget,
To embrace the journey that lies ahead,
Let’s rewrite the story, rewrite it instead.

Hey there, Alex, let it all out,
Unleash your dreams, remove the doubt,
Embrace the magic within your soul,
It’s time to rewrite and take control.

And anytime you feel the pain
Hey, Alex, stay strong, don’t refrain
Don’t carry the weight upon your shoulders
Just reach out, let the world draw closer

Hey there, Alex, don’t you fret,
Take a deep breath and don’t forget,
To embrace the journey that lies ahead,
Let’s rewrite the story, rewrite it instead.

Hey there, Alex, let it all out,
Unleash your dreams, remove the doubt,
Embrace the magic within your soul,
It’s time to rewrite and take control.

Na na na, na-na-na-na, hey Alex
Na na na, na-na-na-na, hey Alex, yeah!

Rewrite it, rewrite it, rewrite it

NEW BEATLES SINGLE COMING

It seems like AI has allowed Now And Then to be completed officially: “We just finished it up and it’ll be released this year” said Paul.

What AI is capable of with original material – a huge upscale in both picture and sound quality for Some Other Guy. Yes, the separation here appears a little clunky, but an attempt at creating a soundscape has been made – I’m sure Peter Jackson could better. Be nice to hear this as a bonus track on the upcoming single…

Mod note: this post was originally a thread with the title Should there be MAL-assisted remixes of Free As A Bird and Real Love ?

With the confirmation of the pending release of Now And Then , closing the chapter on a dangling loose thread from the Anthology project, this naturally raises the question: should there be another pass at Free As A Bird and Real Love ?

The AI machine learning system dubbed MAL brought out the distinct clarity of John’s vocals and piano to enable this song to be finished. That means we have a track of John that’s clear and distinct.

By comparison, both Free As A Bird and Real Love have rather ghostly and fainter vocals from John, due to the limitations of noise reduction technology and cleaning up of these cassettes as they existed in the mid-’90s. Even Jeff Lynne’s second pass at the songs for 1+ could only do so much to clean up the vocals.

So the question is posed: should MAL be employed to clean up the vocals on those two songs and thus, out of necessity, prompt another new mix? If so, how much should be changed or retained? Should the Anthology versions or the 1+ versions be used as the baseline for a new mix? What involvement, if any, should Giles Martin have in such a process, and how should a process be split between him and Jeff Lynne?

I dunno, I kinda would prefer that the sounds of the original recordings’ cassette hiss and ambient noise be left intact on the recording; or reduced, maybe, but still audible. It’s like a subtle sonic reminder that John is singing to us from beyond mortality, a different plane of existence.

(My opinions of those previous John+Threetles songs: I liked “Real Love ” quite a bit, and “Free As A Bird ” not verry much)

I absolutely believe these should be properly cleaned up, and in particular pitch control used to stop John sounding like Pinky and/or Perky on the sped-up Real Love and make it actually sound like him. I’d let Giles loose to mix out the worst elements of Jeff Lynne too, a sort of Let It Be …Naked revisionist approach. Personally Phil Spector and Jeff Lynne just never ‘got’ the George Martin feel which adds so much. Giles of course understands.

At the risk of upsetting people who think the vision of the original project should forever be untouched I also think Giles should be let loose to do a project beefing up some of the many great tracks recorded only in the Let It Be sessions too – we already know the Get Back project made them clear, separated and mixable; now make them album quality with Paul and Ringo overdubs if required, or pulling bits from elsewhere using the techniques learnt during the Love project and used on Now And Then . There’s easily an album’s worth.

Who knows? Maybe this is actually planned, and using it for Now And Then , besides it being a big importance of “the last Beatles song,” is also to warm it up for making a pass at the other two songs. Apple could easily be thinking, “Well, we should do that, and do it to plan a remastering of Anthology, complete with adding Now And Then to Anthology 3 , where it was originally intended,” and thus get more mileage and money out of it. You certainly can’t convince me that NO ONE at Apple is thinking about this and putting it out there.

For me personally, I like what Lynne did with the tracks, and they both feel like real Beatles songs. But I also understand that with the limitations of technology, they could only do so much with John’s vocals. And now the opportunity is there to really make his voice clearer. So if that happens and Giles remixes the songs, I wouldn’t mind that at all.

It’s really amazing what they were able to do with the vocal on Now And Then . I was just thinking hypothetically on the drive to work this morning about how The Beatles LOVE might be different if Peter Jackson’s AI thing existed in the mid-2000s. The selection of songs on LOVE leans heavily towards the latter half of the Beatles career and I always assumed this came down to limitations with the fact that it was two track recording in the earlier part of the Beatles’ recording career. But, then again, I don’t know if George Martin would have gone for this technology. I guess another hypothetical is how LOVE would be different if they were making it today.

That’s exactly the reason why. The later songs were thematically more suitable for the live circus show, but also you just couldn’t separate the tracks on the earlier stuff (at the time!)

Here is a quote from Giles, from the BeatlesBible Love page:

The earlier stuff is sonically similar. It lacks the imagery the later stuff has. Bearing in mind we’re doing a show, ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ lends itself more to a visual thing perhaps than ‘I Should Have Known Better’. On top of that, a lot of the earlier Beatles stuff has no separation on it at all. We were pushed by the Beatles to change things: they wanted experimentation, and you can’t really do that with the earlier stuff. A lot of people say to me ‘Why didn’t you use the drums from this?’ But there’s only a certain number of clean drum tracks in the entire Beatles catalogue. There’s not much stuff from Let It Be, because it’s all live with no separation.

I think it's great you're going through a phase,

Well, sounds like using AI to beef up Get Back material is going to be talked about at some point:

I doubt it and I hope not. Some of the Get Back material is pretty rough. They were meant to be rehearsals and not proper takes. Plus, I don’t know, Now And Then just seems like a proper end. It’s one thing to finish what the Threetles started in the 90s, but it’s another to work on tracks with no involvement from half the band.

Also, what original unreleased tracks are there from Get Back ? Are they really going to do a new version of Madman?

Well, for a start:

Dig It (full length)

All Things Must Pass (multiple versions that could be combined with George’s demo version after Klaus is stripped out)

Madman

Watching Rainbows

Suzy’s Parlour

I Lost My Little Girl

River Rhine

The Palace of the King of Birds

Take This Hammer (medley)

Plus it doesn’t need to be exclusively these sessions with Paul and Ringo adding new stuff, just a few examples:

Instant Karma (John and George, use take 10 as basis)

Oh My Love (John and George)

I’m the Greatest (Paul adds bass, strip out non-Beatles)

Sour Milk Sea (strip out non-Beatles, combine George’s demo. Get inventive with a John contribution)

It’s too bad that after Jackson’s done separating everything with ai, that Peter Cobbin who did the Yellow Submarine Soundtrack do the mixing instead of Giles.

What he did back then, with that technology was pretty amazing.
