Was there any songs lef over from the ten hour session, it just cam to my mind if there was any outtakes from that time. The only one I know of (that wasn’t part of the ten hours) is How Do You Do It . Though that was intended for a single in 1962  so I’m not even sure if that counts.

There is another thread that asks whether Hold Me Tight should be added as the first attempt at recording took place on 11 February. It was also reported on 22 February 1963 by New Musical Express that Keep Your Hands Off My Baby had been recorded. All of the evidence is against this.

Based on Mark Lewisohn’s The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, here is what was recorded on that day.

10.00an-1.00pm
There’s a Place [takes 1-10]
Seventeen (working title of “I Saw Her Standing There “) [takes 1-9]

2.30-6.00pm
A Taste Of Honey [takes 1-5]
Do You Want To Know A Secret ? [takes 1-8]
A Taste Of Honey [takes 6-7]
There’s a Place [takes 11-13]
Seventeen [takes 10-12]
Misery [takes 1-11]

7.30-10.45pm
Hold Me Tight [takes 1-13]
Anna (Go to Him) [takes 1-3]
Boys [take 1]
Chains [takes 1-4]
Baby It’s You [takes 1-3]
Twist And Shout [takes 1-2]

Never cared for Hold Me Tight personally

Yeah, it regularly pops up on “least favourite” lists. I’m curious why it took so many takes – possibly they had trouble staying in sync during the decelerando at the end?

They were really pushing themselves during that evening segment of the session, weren’t they? Playing beat-the-clock, nailing the songs down in four takes or less rather than upwards of eight earlier in the day. (How many of those were false starts/breakdowns? And how many complete alternate takes are still in the archive?)

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I like “Hold Me Tight ” just fine, personally I can only handle “A Taste Of Honey ” on chipmunk-speed. a-hard-days-night-john-5

I love how “Boys ” only took one go.

Sorry I missed this at the time. I suppose the interesting aspect is that, bar A Taste Of Honey earlier in the day, and the aborted Hold Me Tight at the beginning of the evening session, the evening session is where they really do George Martin’s idea of a Cavern set in the studio. Bang, bang, bang. Cover after cover that they didn’t need to think about… apart from Twist And Shout , and then the thought had to be, “Can John make it through this?”

I read once that Paul said Hold Me Tight was very hard to record and they gave up during the Please Please Me session, it did have to do with timing and being complicated, he said they were glad to get it done.

It was a tall task to tackle for such a young band and no experience recording something new before but they got the hang of it.  I’ll bet they never played it live.

And I’ve always liked it, it’s cool to sing along to.
