I have to say, I would much prefer a yard like the ones in your pictures 🙂
I think they’d have played in the ginnel (alley) at the back 🙂 That’s what we used to do as kids as there were lots of them where I grew up 🙂

Totally agree! 🙂 It’s all down to our frames of reference isn’t it? I grew up in the NW of England so my frames of reference would be totally different to people who grew up in other parts of the world 🙂 I don’t think I’ve ever seen a yard with a porch like your picture in real life, only in movies. I’d love one though, I could just see me sitting on that porch sipping a gin and tonic haha 🙂

Do people in the UK use the word “garden” for what people in the US call a “yard”? I think I’ve heard it used that way. Are Desmond and Molly American?
No, not really. To me a yard would be as the wiki article says, an area of land adjacent to a building. They usually tend to be made out of stone or concrete whereas a garden is like soil with grass and plants. I think the main difference is that a yard is functional – its often used for a specific thing, like a parking space or an outdoors dinner table. A garden is more decorative.

Offline Funny video but a lot of these don’t have to do with measurements:
When The Beatles say cup, in all 3 cases they are referring to a drinking cup not an Imperial measurement.
Yard as used in Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is short for backyard, not 3 feet.
In Dig It , The Beatles are referencing the song Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan and has nothing to do with the unpopular Imperial measurement.
When they say pounds in Maggie Mae , they are referring to the British currency.
In all cases except for You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away , when The Beatles say feet they are referring to the feet on our body.
In Lovely Rita , the meter maid is female police officer who writes people parking tickets and the meter part is actually referring to a parking meter.
As for why The Beatles used the Imperial system in their songs, the metric system wasn’t the official system of the UK until 1965 so The Beatles grew up on this system and were likely more familiar with it than the metric system.

Precisely. Not to mention that there is nothing romantic about metric measurements. “I can see for kilometres” “measured out in kilometres” etc just sounds odd.

I’m glad jakepride didn’t miss “Because ” which to my mind has the best “blue” reference — the way Paul stretches out the “oo” syllable (incidentally, a separate and far less common connotation of “blue” in music, since most of the time it refers to something dejected, as in “the blues”).

Haven’t you just identified the massive flaw in @jakepride’s suggestion though, @Pineapple Records?
jakepride suggests that referred to blue “more than any other color”, when the fact is that very few of their uses of “blue” is in terms of the colour, but are instead references to the emotional state or as a type of music. You take out those and their use of it as colour shrinks massively, and is generally to reference to sky or sea.

I didn’t think of that. jakepride is conflating the two types of “blue” and I agree, the “blues song” type “blue” doesn’t (or shouldn’t) really “count” when coralled together with the other type of “blue”, the color blue.

Offline I never knew that album was called “Blue”. It’s kind of cheating because the only blue aspect is the border. It took a lot more creative balls to come out with a pure white cover when the Beatles did it.

I always referred to them (the 1973 compilations) as the “red/blue albums”… The inner sleeves for the vinyl were solid red/blue with the lyrics printed over top and, if memory serves me correctly, the labels on the records were also red/blue in addition to “the border”…:-)

Then you’d have a 55-person choir and orchestra, including acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, Casiotone drum machine, 12-string, mandolin, ukulele, tambourine, and banjo. Let’s make this delightful 2-minute pop song become progressively crazy.
