With the mighty Casiotone MT-65 keeping the beat, here is every Beatles song in 3/4 or 6/4 time. They are:
A Taste Of Honey
My Bonnie
Dig A Pony
Long, Long, Long
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
I Just Don’t Understand
Yer Blues
She’s Leaving Home
Dig It
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Baby’s In Black
Oh Darling
I Me Mine
Norwegian Wood
To Know Her is To Love Her
Yes It Is
You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away
This Boy
We Can Work It Out
I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite

EXTRAS FOR BEATLE GEEKS WHO HAVE READ THIS FAR
This does not include the Anthology versions of I’ll Be Back , Junk, or What’s The New Mary Jane . Nor does it include John’s songs that change time signature every measure (like All You Need Is Love , or Good Morning Good Morning ). They did one waltz live at the Star Club, Falling In Love Again. Also, You Really Got A Hold On Me is played in triplets (technically 12/8, I guess?) but the little Casiotone couldn’t play that fast a tempo!

One you’ve forgotten: Shirley’s Wild Accordion, played in the classic Waltz time. That would have been a fun cover.

"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"

-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues

"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"

-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

It’s time to rock around the clock and count to 20 (and beyond) using only Beatles lyrics. They are:

1-2-3-4-5-6-7 You Never Give Me Your Money

1 I’ll Follow The Sun
2 Norwegian Wood
3 When I’m 64
4 Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby
5 She’s Leaving Home
6 Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite
7 And Your Bird Can Sing
8 Eight Days A Week
9 One After 909 / Revolution 9
10 Mean Mr. Mustard
11 [none]
12 Cry Baby Cry

1-2-3-4 All Together Now

15 She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
16 Sweet Little Sixteen
17 I Saw Her Standing There
18 [none]
19 Taxman
20 Sgt Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band
31 Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
50 The Ballad Of John And Yoko
1,000 Paperback Writer
1,000,000 I’m A Loser

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 Kansas City

BEATLE GEEKS WHO HAVE READ THIS FAR: Of course these aren’t the *only* Beatles songs that have numbers in the lyrics. In fact, there are 45 songs that have the number “one” in the lyrics, and 21 that have the number “two.” Beyond that, the only fingers-and-toes numbers missing from their canon are 11, 13, 14, and 18 (unless you consider “1822!” from Live At The BBC ). There are even fractions, as they sing about a “half” in 10 different songs; and four songs that mention a “million” (see if you can figure them out!)

Taking a long shot that there may be some They Might Be Giants fans on this board. Here is their 21-song medley “Fingertips” performed entirely by Beatles melodies:

Everything is Catching on Fire :: I Should Have Known Better
Fingertips :: Blackbird
I Hear the Wind Blow :: Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da
Hey Now Everybody :: Her Majesty
Who’s That Standing :: Oh Darling
I Found a New Friend :: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Wreck My Car :: Drive My Car
Aren’t You the Guy :: Because
Please Pass the Milk :: Sheik of Araby
Leave Me Alone :: Yellow Submarine
Who’s Knockin’ on the Wall :: Yesterday
All Alone :: Can’t Buy Me Love
What’s That Blue Thing :: This Boy
Something Grabbed a Hold of My Hand :: She’s A Woman
I Don’t Understand You :: Happiness Is A Warm Gun
I Turned Around :: Lovely Rita
Mysterious Whisper :: Let it Be
The Day That Love :: Wild Honey Pie
I’m Havin’ a Heart Attack :: All Things Must Pass
Fingertips :: Something
I Walk Along Darkened Corridors :: Hey Jude

George Harrison called it the “naughty chord,” but it was certainly nice for the Beatles. They used augmented chords in 23 different songs:
I’m Happy Just To Dance With You
Oh Darling!
It Won’t Be Long
Ask Me Why
Glad All Over
Something
From Me To You
It’s Only Love
Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite
Till There Was You
Michelle
Fixing A Hole
I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
Real Love
I Am The Walrus
You Know What to Do
Got To Get You Into My Life
A Taste Of Honey
And Your Bird Can Sing
Don’t Ever Change
All My Loving
Like Dreamers Do
I’ll Be On My Way

FOR BEATLE GEEKS WHO HAVE READ THIS FAR: Only 4 of the 23 are covers (including “A Taste Of Honey ,” which I inadvertently left out of this medley, and “Don’t Ever Change,” which has *three different* augmented chords). These songs clearly inspired some of the early Lennon/McCartney originals that followed. In fact, many of the songs John & Paul gave away also had prominent augmented chords, including the two original demos on the iTunes 1963 Bootleg release: “Bad to Me” by Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, and “I’m in Love” by The Fourmost.

I guess this puts to bed the myth that the early Beatles only wrote primitive dopey love songs. Find a primitive dopey love song today that contains an augmented chord! Or a guitarist who knows how to play it!

Some of these might technically be called minor major 7ths — but if it contains an augmented triad, it’s augmented. And the chord shapes shown are what I play; not to be taken as exact representations of what the Beatles played, or what a Mel Bay guitar book might teach you about augmented chords. Plenty of other YouTube videos can show you how to properly play them, and I highly encourage you to seek them out!

@jakepride, there’s a chord James Taylor uses a lot, would you say it’s an augmented chord?  I don’t know how to show the technical guitar chord grid here, but basically the chord is created by fingering on open A7 and then, instead of sounding the A bass string, you press on the first fret sounding the Bb note.  I always think of it in my unschooled way as an “A7/Bb” (i.e., as an A7 with a Bb bass) — but I suspect it’s actually some kind of Bb chord — augmented or diminished?

Commenters have pointed out some songs I overlooked:

All I’ve Got To Do (intro chord)

I’m So Tired (“I wonder should I call you”)

Old Brown Shoe (“won’t be the same now”)

You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)

Any others I’m missing?

Did you know that the most used number in Beatles lyrics (besides 1 and 2) is a fraction? Let’s take 1/2 a look at these “half” songs:

Julia
Yesterday
Old Brown Shoe
Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby
Day Tripper
Good Morning Good Morning
Glass Onion
Memphis Tennessee
Sweet Little Sixteen
Sheik of Araby

So far as I know, the only other fraction used in the Beatles canon is “quarter to three” in When I’m 64. Can anyone else find another?

That would be a diminished seventh. If the notes are C# E G Bb that’s a C# diminished seventh.

Alright! Let's hear it for Dennis!

According to https://www.jamplay.com/tools/…..rd-finder/

That’s a Bb diminshed 7

Bb Db Fb Abb are the notes in that chord, according to this website.

I think it’s something to do with the bass note, imo. Both chords are right, though.

Thanks to Dennis O’Dell and The Hole Got Fixed. I think the latter is correct, that it depends on what bass note is primary; if the chord is —

Bb–Db–Fb–Abb (=A#–C#–E–G)

with Bb as the bass, then it’s Bb diminished. If any of the other notes happen to be the bass, then the chord is named by that note.  I may have been confused about the James Taylor songbooks. Let me dig one out of a drawer right now, hang on…

Okay, all this time I was running on memory, which was faulty. I thought the JT chord was merely “A” with a degree sign — º.

Now I see, looking up the song where I first learned this chord, “Shower The People”, the chord is this:

A#º.

Which fits, putting the info Dennis and Hole Got Fixed contributed together (anyway, if I had only remembered it correctly as A# not A, I wouldn’t have been confused, since A# = Bb).

The cool thing about the A#º chord on the guitar is that you can play an open A7 and with merely a slight adjustment of your index finger, bass it with Bb (i.e., A#) and leave the rest of the A7 chord intact — the E-G-C#-E.  JT’s frequent use of this is as a bridge in between the transition from A to Bm.

I didn’t realise the augmented chord featured so much in Beatles songs. I heard a song recently from the Esher demos which had an augmented chord. Something like “The day we went to school”…a Paul piano song.

Is that Abb the note they used to call G…..??

Their use of the Augmented chord was, in my opinion, a distinct and essential part of their sound, especially in the earlier days.

I wish, however, they had used the flattened 9th chord to return to the root chord more often; you know, like the one in Live And Let Die ……. “you know you did, you know you did, you know you di id…”….ahdn_paul_06

I just think it sounds more melodic…….george-martin

The Beatles’ early songs were all direct appeals to fans (Love Me Do , From Me To You , P.S. I Love You). In fact, they released SIX FULL ALBUMS before writing an original song with a girl’s name (Michelle ). After that, the floodgates opened. Here are all 26 songs that include female names:

Rocky Raccoon
Lady Madonna
Get Back
Dizzy Miss Lizzy
Carol
Memphis, Tennessee
Polythene Pam
Sexy Sadie
Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
Eleanor Rigby
Let It Be
Maggie Mae
Long Tall Sally
Clarabella
Lucille
Michelle
Martha My Dear
Lovely Rita
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
When I’m Sixty-Four
What’s The New Mary Jane
Dig It
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Julia
Anna (Go To Him)
Dear Prudence

BEATLE GEEKS WHO HAVE READ THIS FAR: It was fascinating to research this, but there were plenty of grey areas. Things I didn’t include:
-Terms of endearment (Baby, Little Child , Girl, Oh Darling, Honey Pie , Young Blood)
-Titles (Her Majesty , Mother Superior, Duchess of Kircaldy)
-Songs that reference other songs (Mean Mr. Mustard (“his sister Pam”); I Am The Walrus (“Lucy in the sky”); Glass Onion (“Lady Madonna “). The demo of Mean Mr. Mustard on Anthology does mention “his sister Shelly.”
-Words that could be names, but could not be. The “Bonnie” in My Bonnie is an adjective. In Back In The USSR , “Georgia’s always on my mind” has several meanings. And no one knows what Norwegian Wood means.
Maxwell’s Silver Hammer also mentions Rose and Valerie, screaming from the gallery.
-No songs from bootlegs, Let It Be sessions, Star Club, etc.
The Ballad Of John And Yoko : the lyrics never mention Yoko’s name!

I like the way jakepride segues from one girl’s name to the next, neither lingering too long nor breezing past too quickly — well done!

(I didn’t know the Beatles ever mentioned “Doris Day”…!)
