You can start hearing the ‘old Paul’ as early as McCartney and at times throughout the Wings era. By McCartney II , you’ll hear that older voice more and more, though he still sounded a lot like Beatle Paul as well. I’d say the real change started somewhere around Flowers In The Dirt , and it became very noticeable around Flaming Pie . The rapid deterioration we hear today seems to really gain momentum about a decade ago, though. His speaking voice changed first, but his singing voice really took a nosedive right around the divorce, I’d say. I have noticed that when he hasn’t done any public appearances in a while, his voice sounds a lot better. Abd funnily enough, there still are moments, when he hits certain notes or uses specific phrasing, when you can hear his young voice. They’re fewer and further between but then he does turn 75 next month and he’s been abusing his vocal cords for roughly 60 years by now…
