I’ve been listening to a podcast recently, called “Screw it, We’re Just Going to Talk About the Beatles”. Decent podcast, not the best, but the topics are interesting. They had a couple of shows where the host played Beatles albums for a friend who had never listened to a Beatles album before. He played him Abbey Road and The White Album , and got his comments as he listened.
The guy’s name was Eugene. I want to note that his impressions were overall very favorable, but he did have his criticisms (nothing wrong with that). Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it’s kind of hard for me to understand people who don’t fully appreciate the Beatles’ genius, it’s hard for me to see their point of view, it’s like madness to me. One of his criticisms was that some of the songs sounded like something Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem would play, from the Muppets. Songs like Octopus’ Garden, Maxwell’s Silver Hammer , and Wild Honey Pie . That kind of irked me but I can see what he’s saying.
But what really had me baffled was his comments on Paul’s voice on Oh! Darling and Why Don’t We Do It In The Road. He basically said he would like these songs if someone else had sung them. He felt that Paul’s voice on these came across as inauthentic, forced, soulless imitations of great blues singers. Obviously Paul was influenced by blues singers, but to me this is just Paul pulling out his rock voice. And to me, both John and Paul have two of the greatest rock voices in music history.
He also noted that he didn’t mind when John tried this, it came across as more honest. Now I agree John’s does the “rock” voice better than Paul, although Paul’s voice is more versatile, I think, he can sing more nuanced styles.

It’s a shame that Paul is losing his voice now. Saw him on concert a couple of years ago and, along with Egypt Station, is not very strong anymore.
I believe that John wanted to sing Oh! Darling as her felt he would have done it better.

While I do agree @JW OBoogie (and welcome!) – it’s only natural that as you age you lose your vocal agility – when I saw Paul less than 2 years ago he surprised me with his ability to still hit the top note in Hey Jude .
But yes, he is losing some of the stuff that made him really great 50 year ago.

I think Paul’s voice was still fine around ‘Memory Almost Full ‘
Whatever…….I’d still rather see and hear him sing his songs than anyone else.

Is there a clip of John singing it somewhere?

Paul’s voice has certainly changed with age but it’s really not quite as bad as some people (coughcoughmyfather) would make you think- when I saw him in July I was shocked at how good he still was. He played for like 3 1/2 hours and I barely saw him take a sip of water.

I still feel this way (as I stated on 22 May 2017).
When I have been on a more recent Paul kick, listening to his Beatles songs sounds odd until I get adjusted.
I don’t try to compare his current voice to his younger voice. I enjoy both for what they are. I like them both.

To respond to the o.g. post, I listen to the same podcast and I disagreed with their opinion that John should’ve sung the song. I know John wanted to sing Oh! Darling and had a better raw “rock” voice than Paul might have, but I don’t think I would’ve liked John’s version over Paul’s. I think that John’s vocals would’ve added a different tone and take the expression of the song in a direction that Paul didn’t want to take it if that makes sense?
Also, I just don’t understand how they think Paul comes across as soulless and inauthentic? Maybe there isn’t as much raw and unfiltered emotion like there would be in a Lennon song, but Paul’s vocals and expression on Oh! Darling still hits me like a tidal wave and I can feel it. Like, yeah he is trying to imitate blues singers because he admires them and is influenced by them, but Oh! Darling and Why Don’t We Do It In the Road are just perfect examples of why Paul is terrific at vocal range and music.
To me, Why Don’t We Do It In the Road is a Paul song and Paul really does capture the sexiness and raunchiness of the tune perfectly by himself. I’m intrigued by Eugene’s and Will’s opinions on “Screw It…,” but this is one of the times where I heavily disagree.
Hopefully my rant made sense lol

I agree that what makes WDWDIITR rock so much is the way that Paul sings it. His ability to cover so many styles of music is part of his genius. I’m not sure anyone else, John included, could have sung those lines and made them sound as good.
