I could be wrong, but I think the two finger salute(not the Cub Scout saute which is what I thought of when I first read that) is back handed, like in this picture.

And the peace sign is front handed, like Ringo Starr is demonstrating in this picture.

You are correct. The two-fingered salute shows the back of the hand, whilst the peace sign shows the palm.

Personally, I would have used this photo to demonstrate the former

Considering I didn’t know really what the two finger salute was till I googled it, this probably wouldn’t have come to mind since I didn’t realize that’s what he was doing the first time I saw it. This gives this picture a whole new meaning for me.
