‘Little Willow’ is the eleventh song on Paul McCartney’s tenth solo album Flaming Pie.
The song was a tribute to Ringo Starr’s first wife Maureen Starkey Tigrett , who died of leukemia in December 1994. See more…
A good friend of mine died, someone we all loved, so I wrote a song that conveyed my mood. It’s heartfelt – instead of writing her kids a letter I wrote a song. It was a very sad day for all of us, and Jeff Lynne and I gave it our all in the studio.

I was playing this song earlier for the first time in absolutely ages and I almost started bawling at least three times, I had to squash the feels down just a bit to get through the song. Maybe it was how I was feeling at the time, or everything that’s going on in the world at the moment; the vid always makes me wanna cry, but today, playing the song itself just hit close to home.

I was listening to Flaming Pie the other day whilst doing schoolwork and when “Little Willow” came on I had to stop what I was doing and just close my eyes and listen to its sweetness

For anyone who didn’t know, this was written as a tribute to Maureen Cox (Ringo’s first wife, of course), who had succumbed to cancer during the album’s recording sessions… and just as Linda would also do within a year of the album’s release.
