A melancholy McCartney song with chilly visuals of winter loneliness.
A long-time fave – obscure from the beginning. Any other comments?

Footprints is a little bit spooky and eerie. I do enjoy the song, not his best, but one of the few songs from Press To Play that I can listen to without immediately turning on something else. I much prefer the Wayne Shorter song of the same title.

Ignore the finished version which is buried in endless unnecessary overdubs and listen instead to the uncluttered early mix that circulates. Stunning.

@Into the Sky with Diamonds,
On a bootleg I downloaded from somewhere a long time ago; I forget the name of the bootleg (something like ‘Played to Press’) and the site.

“Press To Play ” received a lot of negative comments, but I love the song “Footprints.” Unlike many of Paul’s cheerful melodies, the melody on this song is sad and subtle. I have been going through Paul’s song catalog in the past few months and I’ve noticed he writes a lot about waiting for a a past love to return, equating love and yearning for it with this girl who is no longer in his life, or he simply waits for her to call him since 1972 (“The Mess”) until 2018 (“Anyway”). This song is quite heartbreaking, as I believe it’s Paul visiting his older self and he reflects about his life…without this same girl.
Oh white blanket covers the memory
Of all that used to be. all that used to be.
But his heart keeps aching in the same old way,
He can’t help feeling that she might come back someday.

It’s a male “Eleanor Rigby ” – an older, lonely man in a snowy forest.
