It should be noted, @Into the Sky with Diamonds, that they are not “Royal Stamps”, but rather stamps issued by the Royal Mail, which is the UK postal service.
To give some more information on these stamps…
Ron Nasty said in the News Thread on 6 May:
The Royal Mail in the UK have announced they are honouring Paul with a set of twelve stamps to be issued on 28 May.Eight of the stamps will depict album covers:
while a mini sheet of stamps will feature shots of Paul in the studio:
Paul becomes the third solo artist to have a dedicated set of stamps (following David Bowie in 2017 and Elton John in 2019).
The Beatles had a dedicated set of 10 stamps in 2007:
(Only the second set of stamps to feature living people other than Royals after the Royal Mail changed its rules in 2005 which prevented the depiction of any living person other than the Monarch or members of the Royal Family; with the first set commemorating the England cricket team’s victory in the 2005 Ashes.)
This puts Paul in the unique position of having a set of dedicated stamps to commemorate the band he was a member of and another set to mark his solo career.
David Gold from the Royal Mail said:
Paul McCartney remains a vital figure at the centre of rock and pop – an artist whose legacy is immense, but whose work continues to generate popular attention and critical acclaim. This dedicated stamp issue is a fitting tribute to one of the UK’s much loved and revered musical icons.
They will be issued in multiple versions, from sheets of stamps to first day covers, from presentation packs to framed editions.
On your question, I can see the reasoning behind having the three McCartney albums included, but as to the other five… It’s hard to say they represent either the best five albums from his solo years, or the best album artwork, though one or two would be contenders.
Since the stamps have been created with the involvement of MPL, it might have been interesting had Paul run a poll on his social media to find what fans would choose, without mentioning he was doing the poll to help decide a set of stamps.
But then, some of the choices may well be down to how well the images work stamp-size. It’s like, Venus And Mars but no Band On The Run ? But then you have to wonder how well BotR would work stamp-sized. I’d certainly have New in there, rather than Egypt Station.

@Ron Nasty thanks for the Royal clarification.
I was thinking exactly the same thing about New vs Egypt Station. New is the better album, but I suppose ES has a catchier look. I wondered about Band On The Run , but I think you’ve got the answer.
