Paul performed live last night at Candlestick Park in San Francisco closing down this historic venue to a sellout crowd of 49,000. He brought 900 fireworks with him and played for 3 and 1/2 hours. I was not able to attend but heard it was a fantastic show. Did anyone attend the show? If so, I look forward to hearing everyone’s stories.

Note by Ahhh Girl 17 August 2014: The Candlestick Park concert was a part of Paul McCartney ‘s Out There Tour. The mods decided to keep the discussion on this particularly historic event separate from the discussion on the Out There Tour thread. For reference, the timing of this concert fits into the Out There Tour thread right after this post. https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..0/#p135909

Posted at Paul’s FB:

Paul took the crowd of 50,000 at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on a Magical Mystery Tour back through time at last night’s historic ‘Farewell To Candlestick: The Final Concert’.

During a rarely performed rendition of Little Richard’s ‘Long Tall Sally ‘ — the last song to be performed in its entirety at The Beatles’ August 29, 1966 final concert at the same venue — the crowd was transported back to that very same night courtesy of a collection of previously unreleased photographs by the late Jim Marshall Photography LLC.

The only photographer to be granted unfettered access to photograph The Beatles’ last ever concert, Marshall’s images were granted this exclusive usage by Paul for his bittersweet goodbye to this iconic ballpark. The images will next be viewable by the general public with the October 14 release of a new book on Marshall’s work The Haight: Love, Rock and Revolution (Insight Editions).

The Haight… is currently available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

I’ll be editing this post with significant coverage of Candlestick Park:

The Examiner’s report: Pt 1 and Pt 2

USA Today

Local ABC7 channel and coverage of the traffic nightmare.

Fan video of Long Tall Sally.

SF Chronicle – they say only bootleggers sold merch commemorating the event, but a friend said they had hoodies specific to the concert that sold out fast.

Beatles Magazine (warning, a radio show is on auto play at this site)

Rolling Stone

Mercury News

I was there, the show itself was great! He (jokingly) said “Candlestick was the last place the Beatles played, and we got so pissed off we never played again.” He also played Long Tall Sally in the encore and mentioned it was the last song the Beatles had played there.

The only problem was the traffic issue, it was all over Bay Area news today. Traffic getting in was so bad that thousands of people were not only late, but never made it to the show and listened in their cars from outside the venue. I got there pretty early so I didn’t have a problem getting in, but after the show it took me two and a half hours to get out of the parking lot. Apparently traffic/parking had been handled by a private company, but since its closing, the venue stopped employing them, so last night was basically just a free for all.

So the show was great, but a little overshadowed by the traffic insanity.

He can still sing “Long Tall Sally “??? Wonder if he changed the key.

@McCall1981, lucky! Wish I could have been there, but I don’t live in the US.

This is Paul playing Long Tall Sally :

Considering how tired The Beatles were of touring in 1966, I wonder if Paul had more fun singing Long Tall Sally more this go-around than that one. Was that the only song he did that The Beatles did there in ’66?

It would have poetic if whoever filmed that version of “LTS” cut out at about the 1:00 mark… just like Tony Barrow’s tape did while taping that Candlestick concert all those years ago.

Having been at Candlestick (attended a Phillies-Giants game there in ’95) I can attest to how cold that place can be, even in the middle of summer. Yet Paul’s out there with nothing but a white dress shirt and dress slacks. He’s a tougher man than you and I, that’s for sure…

I believe he also did Day Tripper , Yesterday and Paperback Writer .

Would have been quite appropriate if Paul had announced his retirement from touring after this show – sad but appropriate. Amazing that he played 40 (forty) songs that night, most artists dont play half that amount or even half the length of his show.

FOURTY?! Woah. That’s amazing. So is that LTS performance. Can you think of anyone of that age who still sounds so great? Hell, most singers in their twenties or thirties don’t sound that great!

I want this to be made into a DVD very badly.

Here’s how one person described Paul for being able to do that
Paul McCartney – This man is a freak of nature!

To that I say, Paul is freakingly awesome!
