My issue with ‘Pipes Of Peace ‘ is that aside from two songs (the title track and ‘So Bad’) I loathe the entire album; not even the bonus disc can get me interested. One very much to wait until its reduced or found to buy second-hand*.I get why Paul decided to release them together but if we get this yet there is no ‘Wild Life ‘, ‘Red Rose Speedway ‘, Back To The Egg ‘ etc i’ll be fuming for ever more.
*Actually i might just download those two tracks and forget about the rest.
Yes, obviously they decided to go with Paul’s next most critically acclaimed album (Tug Of War ) along with its follow-up, which featured his last #1 hit (despite being his weakest album next to Press To Play ). I’d like to think London Town and Back To The Egg will be on tap for next year (and Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway the year after)… though I suppose it could also just as easily be Flowers In The Dirt (since it was considered his ‘comeback’ album) and Off The Ground .

JUST Flowers, though? Jeez, we were starting to go along at a nice, er, clip there. Is there any way to hire faster (and seemingly more motivated) workers to take over this whole enterprise?

I’m a little lost in how it takes them the same time to do either one or two at a time. And surely remixing a whole album from scratch + remastering the album is longer than just remixing it. Or is it contractually bound that every release must be at the end of the year?
As for the pace its safe to say that i’ll have re-read all three volumes of ‘All Those Years’ twice if the archive collection continues at this snails crawl. I wonder if Lewisohn, McCartney and Apple (‘Let It Be ‘ – they’ve been working on the new film for 12 years!!) are all in a competition to outlast the others and see who finishes last. And where’s that Harrison outtakes/rarities box?

Flowers In The Dirt doesn’t really pair with any other album though, apart from the mammoth Tripping The Live Fantastic . Apart from the Wings one there haven’t been any live albums reissued so far, so I wonder if they’ll bother with them. It’s probably quite hard to augment a triple live album with extra tracks and not make it seem like they’re scraping the barrel.
It’s fairly easy to see future campaigns around these pairs:
- Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway
- London Town and Back To The Egg
- Give My Regards To Broad Street and Press To Play
Putting those out together makes it easier to hide the weaker album, as they did with Tug Of War /Pipes Of Peace (though in the case of Broad Street/PTP they’re both pretty poor). It also saved Paul from having to be interviewed about some pretty duff songs in some cases.
Flowers In The Dirt is generally held to be Paul’s comeback album after a very hit-and-miss mid-80s. There are also a lot of Elvis Costello demos that can be bundled with it, and the family tree, sticker, poster etc from the World Tour Pack if they were so inclined (similar to the Venus And Mars reissue). I think it’s sensible to put this out as a standalone, like Ram or Band On The Run were.
I wonder if they’ll go into the 90s and beyond with these reissues. The lack of chronological order does make it difficult to guess which direction they’ll go in next. A classical selection? Rock ‘N’ Roll oldies (Choba B CCCP /Run Devil Run )? The Fireman and Liverpool Sound Collage ?

I think you could successfully argue that it pairs with Off The Ground , since he used the same backing band for both recording AND performing/touring during that whole era (albeit with Blair Cunningham taking over on drums from Chris Whitten in late ’90/very early ’91), and it also contained songs he wrote with Elvis Costello. Apart from Unplugged (only because several songs performed didn’t make it onto the final album), I really don’t care about the other live albums getting reissued.

I’ve lost interest. Paul is doing them so haphazardly and disappointingly on so many levels. It now seems the bangs and whistles deluxe version won’t even bother to include the b-sides and single versions as part of the physical product, coming only as downloads.
Soon I can imagine him charging £150 for the deluxe packaging and just including a download code instead of discs.

Lost interest ages ago (this is the 10th release in 7 years for a catalogue that has something like 42 albums in total which means 28 years if we see it all at this current rate!! That’s longer than by a decade for the complete ‘Tune In’!!).
As for the content all this approach is doing is pissing off hardcore fans and forcing folk to go to illegal downloads for the content.
In addition to its wealth of audio and video content, exclusive features of the Deluxe Edition include a 32-page notebook of Paul’s handwritten lyrics and notes, a catalogue for Linda McCartney’s 1989 Flowers In The Dirt photo exhibition, a 64 page photobook featuring the music videos for ‘This One’, and a stunning, custom-created 112-page book telling the complete story of the album through exclusive in-depth interviews with Paul, Elvis Costello and other key contributors. Along with expanded track-by-track information, the book contains album and single artwork as well as previously unpublished photographs by Linda McCartney.
Who wants that ?

Why does the UK deluxe from Amazon cost £134.99 when the US Amazon store charges $117.99 which converts to £94.62? If you buy from the US store you also get free shipping (within two days if you have Prime).
Fun review by the way @PeterWeatherby.

I hate that they don’t ever have a middle tier release with just the album and the bonus disc(s) as well as the DVD, and no pictures or books or whatever.

Same. When this whole thing started back in 1948, I was excited about picking up the remastered albums one by one just to complete my collection. I was holding off buying the original CDs in favor of the new ones. Now, I just don’t care as I have the early ones I really enjoy and have no interest in exploring anything beyond those. I may decide to purchase some of them down the line, but won’t go out of my way to have them. For someone who has traditionally enjoyed delivering a great fan experience, he really blew it with this.
At least one positive has come from this, though. I’ve moved on and am now spending my music budget on live performance DVDs. There are many great ones out there and I am really enjoying them.
Thanks Paulie.

I’m listening to the remastered Flowers In The Dirt , and I have to say I’m going to be keeping my original CD. They seem to have taken the 80’s sound out of the album, which was part of its charm, in my opinion.
