Woo hoo – I now have a shiny new copy of “New” in my hands – cue Charles Dickens story about the overloaded credit card, which is now overdue as I spent the money I was going to use for the monthly bill on the Lewisohn book – at least I have a few weeks to busk or something before “BBC Vol 2” comes out.

Luckily the deluxe edition has the colour cover I like better – though A$5 for a couple more songs and (I think) slightly lengthier booklet is a little much.

I was going to comment on CD packaging but don’t want “kind Mr Nasty sir” hitting me over the head with an off-topic submarine so will create a separate post in a better spot for that :)

[EDIT] Well, I created the other thread, but will comment here as well since this is “New” related.  I’m kind of disappointed that in the ‘deluxe’ set that when you open the folding cover you are greeted with another exact copy of the cover image, why not include the alternate colour version off the ‘standard’ edition?  But then I suppose it’s better than the blank white (there’s that colour again) inside the ‘standard’ edition of “Kisses On The Bottom “.

Happy dance. New music to tickle the eardrums. I’m off on Tuesday when its my turn to get the cd. I’ll have to keep myself hyper occupied until it arrives on my doorstep that day or I’ll go nuts waiting for it.

Enjoy your day off listening to it. I’m hoping the station gets a promo copy like we did with Early Takes Volume 1 from George and I played it that week on the show, because otherwise I don’t think I’ll be able to get New till the end of the month. Sucks being broke, but better than nothing…

I’m lacking any desire to rush out and get Paul’s cd (the name is now annoying me, the first time it was amusing  but with every repeat of people pointing out the pun in the papers, online etc it gets more irritating). I’ll pick it up next time i’m in a place that stocks it be it in a few days or a week or two. I’ve listened to the title track a whole 1 1/5 times.

Regarding cd packing, the days of excitement for the artwork is pretty much gone – the anthology’s were probably the last time i read thru the notes endlessly. In so many ways in music it seems like we are returning to pre-’62 Beatles.

Happy listening to it trcanberra and everyone else, i do hope it’s as good as the reviews are saying.

You can hear a sample of the Japanese-only CD track by going here and choosing Struggle (track no. 15). You’ll have to change your country to Japan. Make sure to change back to your home country afterward – the link will be at the bottom of the iTunes store, but now in Japanese.

I love this sample and I hope to get an mp3 of the full version somehow.

It is *KILLING* me to have to wait an extra day to pick the new album up (tomorrow after work). My local record shop has these cool multicolored flashing cubes with the album logo (official merch) they’re giving away to the first 10 or so people who buy the album, and they’ve reserved one for me, a nice bonus treat to go with the CD! :D

It’s the best record store I’ve ever been to. I’ve been going there almost 20 years, when I started college way back when. They’re always really friendly, have a great selection, cheap prices, great vinyl section, and an excellent frequent buyers/customer loyalty program. They’re very supportive of local artists, too, hell, they even sell copies of my 2 books in their store!

Anyway, they’d posted on twitter last week a Vine of the cube flashing and said they had a limited number. I tweeted back that it was cool and asked how limited they were and since they know I’m a big Beatles/Paul fan, they tweeted back they’d reserve one for me. They’re the best!

Via Paul’s FB: he will be signing copies of the album this Friday at 3pm at the Oxford St. HMV (the same one that was giving away copies of Live At The BBC Vol. 2 7″ this morning). Later this week, there’ll be a chance to guarantee an entry via his Twitter page.

Edit:

* You’ll be able to watch the Bang & Olufsen talk live at 2pm UK time here at YouTube. You can send in questions via Twitter to @Paul McCartney using #askmccartney.

* They haven’t announced the winner of the BBC contests yet, so you might still have a chance to submit your entry.

If anyone in the US can get hold of a spare cube from an FYE store (in person only, I understand), and would be willing to post it to the UK (I’ll cover all costs), please let me know – joe at beatlesbible dot com. I’d very much appreciate it.

EDIT: change of heart, thanks to Parlance for helping out, but I can’t really justify buying two copies of the album at this time (mine’s still in the post, grrr).

Can buy me love! Please consider supporting the Beatles Bible on Amazon

^^ I’m calling around to see if I can get one.

And I’m still willing to trade for one of those beer coasters if anyone got an extra.

And from Paul’s site – apparently you need instructions to open the CD.

The deluxe cover has one more extra fold so you have to take that out from the inside, you still have a good chance of ripping the cover (and scratching the CD when you try and get IT out).  Check out my post on CD packaging.

I’m a little behind everyone here… just heard the title song for the first time, and… it’s quite pleasant but it sounds like the work product of someone assigned to write a song “in the style of Paul McCartney ” – a bit like the old Rutles. Anyone else feel that way?

Even the the line “we can do what we want” seems lifted right out of one of his recent songs (somebody here on the Forum will know which one). Anyway, my CD is on order, so I look forward to the rest! (By the way I REALLY like the NEW logo in all its various colors. Too bad he couldn’t do something like that for Memory Almost Full ; what a stodgy cover that was!)

Finished it a couple of minutes ago.
My opinion: Very strong first-half, I was brushing my teeth and dancing while listening to it :) Second-half dragged a bit but relatively enjoyable. I love “On My Way to Work” and “Alligator”, not to keen on “Hosanna”. The idea of “Scared” as a hidden track was kinda ruined as every article about New commented on how it had a “hidden track”. Slightly spoiled it but anyways
It gets: 3.7/5

Also… a matter of crossed signals with Joe led to my putting down a deposit on an extra copy of the standard album with the lighted cube which he no longer needs. Before I resort to ebay, does anyone want one? If so, please PM me. And if you’d rather have the deluxe album, I can probably switch out the reservation from standard to deluxe – you got the cube either way.

And if this should go under Pimp My Stuff, my apologies.

Edit: Spoken for now, thanks!

Paul was in fine voice for the high school concert, and you could tell a good number of the kids were familiar with his music, especially from the way they squealed during  “Blackbird ” and “Hey Jude .” They really got into “Back In The USSR .”

I have to admire the poise of these kids. If I’d been 14 and had the chance to ask Paul McCartney a question in that context, I would have fainted in front of my classmates. Not only did they have to go up and speak into a mike, but the spotlight remained on the student why Paul addressed him or her directly and answered the question. I think I would have been like, “Wah, don’t Look At Me while you’re answering my question!” *thud*

I saw one Beatles t-shirt (it was black with white letters) on one boy in the audience. Did you see any others?

I was quite thrilled to see so many of them singing along.
