Will do but i have one heck of a backlog to get thru which includes the second listenings of New and Chaos and Creation as well. No idea when i will get to it but it might just slip up a few places very quickly. It’s Paul, orders go out the window.

I love Electric Arguments maybe even as much as Ram .The treatment of Paul’s voice is a really interesting choice; it’s further back in the mix than usual, as if it’s just another instrument in the arrangement. This suits the improvisational spirit of the album, and lets the age in Paul’s voice add character without being jarring.
All the transitions in “Traveling Light” are just stellar, IMO. That high atonal piano(?) note gets me every time. And the swirly little descent into the tropical slide guitar, too.
“Sun Is Shining” wasn’t an early favorite, but it’s grown on me tremendously. The intro finally clicked; it sounds exactly like those last few moments of sleep, where you gently bob against the surface a few times before suddenly being awake (and, if you’re Paul, apparently, immediately leap out of bed. YAY! IT’S A DAY!). Very pretty song, and the bass is gorgeous.
I’m not as crazy about the second half, though I think it’s cool how the album gradually gets more and more ambient and “experimental.” Adore the melancholy piano in “Universal Here, Everlasting Now.”
Great observations, acmac. I think the album’s blossom into more free-associative, experimental sounds towards the end is very natural – like it’s been bubbling under the surface for the first half and then the music just splits open and lets it flow out, swallowing up the conventional song structures with more focus on “atmospherics.”

Offline This is the Paul album i’ve been waiting for for what seems an eternity. Haven’t finished it yet (got up to track seven) but as soon as Nothing Too Much Just Out Of Sight started my whole being was saying “Paul, where have you been?”. Loud, unkempt, wilder than normal, a great vocal. Reminded me of some of the best moments on Flaming Pie (like in Sovereign where it lets go at around the 2:45 mark). The others are also more interesting to me than most of what has been released in the last 15 years (Light From You Lighthouse is another cracking tune).
Most of the songs are interesting even if slower paced. To me this is Paul making an album for himself and not caring what others think whilst the others have been Paul making an album for himself but wanting others to like.
Give me more of this over everything since Flaming Pie .

Offline I wish I liked this album, and I’ve tried several times over, especially as I’ve been told it’s weird I like the more “experimental” songs on NEW but not so much this album. I’ll keep trying. ;->

Agree wholeheartedly, MMM. There are a few tunes off Chaos that I like a lot (the best of the bunch being “Growing Up, Falling Down,” which got made a B-side, go figure), but I’ve never been as fond of it as most Paul fans seem to be.
I absolutely love “Lighthouse,” too. Paul should do more songs in that “choir of quirky Pauls” style. 
I’ve heard a few rumblings that his next project will be another Fireman album; I’ve even heard that some of the tracks are already in the can. I sure hope that’s are true. IMO Youth is Paul’s best collaborator since The Beatles. I wonder if he’s planning to put more steam into promoting the next one, since Arguments got such good reviews, but very little promotion and low sales. Half of me hopes so, but the other half worries that that would upset the crucial “making it just for himself and not caring” attitude MMM talked about.
P.S. Parlance, I’m constantly amused by how your new icon can suit the tone of almost any comment. For the one above, it’s particularly apt. Icon For All Occasions!

I was just reading a 1984 interview that Paul and Linda did for Playboy, to promote Give My Regards To Broad Street . He’s asked about a few songs, and this stood out:
PLAYBOY: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da .
PAUL: A fella who used to hang around the clubs used to say Jamaican accent , “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da , life goes on,” and he got annoyed when I did a song of it, ’cause he wanted a cut. I said, “Come on, Jimmy, it’s just an expression. If you’d written the song, you could have had to cut.” He also used to say, “Nothin’s too much, just outta sight.” He was just one of those guys who had great expressions, you know.
Was this link well known? I find it interesting that a phrase that McCartney heard in around 1968 was mentioned again in a 1984 interview, and reappeared as a song title in 2008.

Paul McCartney , who together with producer Youth are the experimental duo The Fireman, explained the origins of this tune to The Sun November 28, 2008: “In the Sixties, I used to hang out with a black singer called Jimmy Scott, the guy who said ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da , life goes on.’ He also used to say ‘Nothing too much just outta sight.’ Youth said it was a good start for a song so I got in that persona.”

Can’t find any active links, sorry. I did have a look about when it was last posted.

Offline I bought this album on double vinyl – it was only £11 on amazon.co.uk so seemed worthwhile. It’s the limited, numbered version with two vinyl discs, a CD copy and a booklet.
The first record wouldn’t fit on my turntable! The hole in the middle was too tight. I’ll have to look into filing it out a little, but I’d be worried about getting it wrong. Has anyone experienced this before? I should probably return it but I can’t be bothered to deal with third-party sellers, trips to the post office etc. Fortunately the CD plays fine (I didn’t even try the second disc).
I really like Electric Arguments. I’ve had it before on mp3 but it’s really nice to have a proper version. And I found it far more interesting than most recent McCartney albums, and the other Fireman ones too. Although I didn’t think it particularly experimental, it’s good to see him making music without worrying too much about how it might be perceived by his wider fanbase (ie don’t scare the mainstream), which I think causes him to play it safe quite often.
Edit: searching Google for [vinyl record spindle hole too small] sent me to this Steve Hoffman thread which suggests it’s a known issue with Electric Arguments.

Offline I’ve had that problem with a record before, and you do have to be careful–the record will slip around if the hole is too big.
Sometimes you can just put it on and take it off several times and that will widen the hole–depends on how tight it is, though.
