@meanmistermustard @sigh butterfly @sir walter raleigh

I didn’t care that much for Driving Rain , but really liked the opening song Lonely Road.

I didn’t find anything that I can recall on Memory Almost Full .

But I REALLY liked most of the New album and 2 songs on Egypt Station.

So there!

We can agree to start with his post-Beatle production.

What if we ask people to list the songs they’d want with them “on a desert island” however many that may be – and give each song a point?

@Ron Nasty Any thoughts on all this?

That’s a good idea. I was thinking the same thing. People can make a list of the songs they absolutely must see on the list. I’ll start working on mine.

My two cents: If we compile a master list of individual lists (if I got it right?), then restrictions ins advance make no sense. Everybody except for me and my monkey should post his/her, let’s say top 50 and then we compile.

And with such projects, the individual lists are usually at least as interesting as the master list.

Into the Sky with Diamonds said
Sirius XM, in honor of Sir Paul’s 78th birthday last week, ran his Top 50 songs as voted by their listeners.

Voters completely left out songs from the last 38 years, suggesting they just didn’t think the songs are that good.

I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts.

I luv Macca, but there are NO legendary songs from the last 38 years, just all around good songs, and some not so good ones. Plain and simple. My list would include solo songs from 1970-1976.

Hmmm…a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Thinking about Paul’s discography on a personal level (purely based on a purchasing and listening) this is what I’ve got. I am a collector and bought every Paul/Wings album released between 1970 and 1989 (usually within the first 48 hours). Including Wings Over America , that’s 17 albums. Of all those albums only two were listened two at the same rate as my Beatle albums (lets say at least 100 uninterrupted plays from first note to last note). Those albums are Band On The Run and Wings At The Speed Of Sound . BOTR is kind of obvious with lots of upbeat singles and LA rain clouds and I played it constantly. WATSOS was my wife’s favorite album and was easily the #1 heard music in my 1976 home. She listened to that album while driving, surfing, exercising, cooking, love making, feeding the cats, gardening, etc… If we pulled in the driveway and a song was in the middle, she wouldn’t exit until it was over. So I’m sure my top 50-60-70 Paul songs will include all the songs on those two albums for how they make me feel (sweet nostalgia). Another example, My Love was very popular in Hawaii and would play seamlessly in the middle of a pure uke/slack key play list. It’s impossible to listen to that song and not be taken back to Hawaiian folks dancing under the palms. Feels like Top 10 but is it really? The other albums have songs I love, but with the exception of McCartney and Ram I never listened to them all the way through. It’s a strange that after I saw Paul in a 1990 concert (which I loved- I believe in yesterday), I never purchased another album until NEW (which was on the advice of the forum). I did however spend a ton of $$ on all things Anthology. So to Bongo’s point, for me it will be hard to figure out a way to rank the post-1990 output with so many songs I’ve never heard and which could never mean as much to me as the 70s output. At least with Spotify and You Tube it won’t take much effort or expense to get caught up but no doubt my list will be “front loaded”.

I’ve actually bought every album straight through at the time of its release – except Give my regards to Broadstreet, and on every album I’ve found at least a couple of songs I really like (maybe not on Wildlife or Pipes Of Peace ). I agree that Flaming Pie (and Chaos and Creation) are as good as any McCartney album.

Obviously, as @sigh butterfly points out, some songs are connected to times of your life that you’re fond of, and you’ll have a stronger connection to them. And while in the last 38 years there have been no songs that are better than the McCartney songs from his Beatle days, there are plenty of songs that could have seamlessly fit into a Beatles album.

One fun thing about seeing other people’s lists is that it can make you think twice about songs you never thought about.

Also, you might feel better about liking a song when you realize that someone else out there really likes it too.

Finally, curiosity might drive you to listen to songs you’ve never heard of.

I’m going to start working on my list of McCartney songs I’d take with me on a desert island. I’m going to include songs he’s co-written with others.

Thanks @Into the Sky with Diamonds, I appreciate your thoughts and I see a path forward. To be fair I remarried in the early 90s and we had a baby, so my music tastes and buying habits changed quite a bit around then. Also with the internet it is extremely easy to only listen to a few songs from an album.  It will be fun to check out in detail what Paul has been up to for the last 30 years a-hard-days-night-paul-8. How many songs are typically on a desert island list?

Some of finest songs ever are fairly new. Only Mama Knows, and Alligator of course. Memory Almost Full and New are both loaded with great music in general, and of course Flaming Pie .

Everybody should just list the songs he/she knows and loves the most, restricted only by preference and knowledge. I don’t know every album in and out myself, but rather have a pretty balanced overview from the 70s to the 2010s.

“Alligator”! OMG – there’s a good example of at least one other person out there in the universe who likes the same obscure song you do!

You can take as many songs as you want on your desert island 🙂

@Monkberry Moon Delight

Monkberry Moon Delight is one of top 5 McCartney songs. I’m surprised it never garnered more attention; then again, I feel that way about a number of his songs.

@Into the Sky with Diamonds

When I first heard Alligator I listened to it on repeat for about an hour and then at least ten times more during the rest of the day. Best song on NEW, and NEW has many great songs…

Monkberry Moon Delight was one of my absolute favourites too, now not so much anymore, it’s still a great song but it doesn’t stand out to me that much anymore. But then again, that’s just in relation to Maccas great body of work, MMD is still a very fine track.

Should we break 5his into two parts – up to 1976 & after ’76? Or by decade?

I like his newer stuff better. I don’t want to see one era swamped by the other.

Could do Paul’s actual solo works separate from all the Wings material, could even then split the solo works somewhere. That would mean or example Wings, ‘McCartney, Ram and, skipping all Wings, from McCartney II ’ to ‘Off The Ground ’ and then the rest. No idea how that falls with the number of albums in each of the three groups.

I get the sense that people (McCartney fans) are familiar with his 70’s material – and then it tapers off.

I would therefore tend to break it up into 70’s and everything thereafter – or people might just list their “desert island” songs and let’s see where it goes.

Since it’s raining and I can’t go out and play, I’ve put together this somewhat chronological list of the Macca songs I’d want with me. I’m including co-written songs and great live versions of Beatles songs. Sorry if it’s long, but that’s what I’m taking with me to my “island” (“it’s all in the mind, you know”)

Maybe I’m Amazed (McCartney 1970)

Every Night     (“)

Junk                 (“)

Another Day (single 1971)

Live And Let Die (single + Back in the World concert 2002)

Heart Of The Country (Ram 1971)

Monkberry Moon Delight (“)

Dear Boy   (“)

Big Barn Bed  (Red Rose Speedway 1973)

Only One More Kiss. (“)

Band On The Run (Band On The Run 1973)

Ms. Vanderbilt (“)

Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five. (“)

Junior’s Farm (Single 1975)

Venus And Mars and Venus And Mars Reprise (without Rock Show) (Venus And Mars )

Beware My Love (Wings At The Speed Of Sound 1976)

Rockestra Theme (“)

Lady Madonna (Wings Over America version 1976)

Deliver Your Children (London Town 1978)

Don’t Let It Bring You Down (“)

Winter Rose (without Love Awakens) (Back To The Egg 1979)

Daytime Nighttime Suffering (single 1979)

Summer Day’s Song (McCartney II 1980)

Lucille (Concert for Kampuchea 1981)

Take It Away (Tug Of War )

Say Say Say (Pipes Of Peace with M. Jackson)

Footprints (Press To Play with Eric Stewart)

My Brave Face (Flowers In The Dirt with Elvis Costello 1989)

Put It There (Flowers In The Dirt )

Things We Said Today (live version off Tripping The Live Fantastic )

Sgt Pepper /Sgt Pepper Reprise (live version off Tripping The Live Fantastic )

Hope of Deliverance (Off The Ground 1993)

The Lovers That Never Were (Off The Ground with Elvis Costello)

The World Tonight (Flaming Pie 1997)

If You Wanna (Flaming Pie )

Some days (Flaming Pie )

Beautiful Night (Flaming Pie )

Lonely Road (Driving Rain 2001)

Jenny Wren (Chaos and Creation 2005)

How Kind of You (“)

A Certain Softness (“)

Your list proves that Paul’s catalogue goes WAY beyond the 70s. The album with the most appearances on your list is Flaming Pie

@sir walter raleigh

We both picked 4 songs off Flaming Pie – but different ones (except for Beautiful Night).

We also share just one song off Chaos and Creation and New. (The song New strikes me as sounding like someone trying to write a la Paul McCartney – a pastiche)

For some reason, Early Days sounds whiny to my ears.

Glad we both like the relatively obscure Daytime Nightime Suffering (a B-side!)

I really enjoy Warm and Beautiful, but in the spiritual genre I went with Summer Day’s Song.

Daytime Nighttime Suffering is beautifully written, every section is as catchy and clever as Paul ever gets. @Into the Sky with Diamonds we also both shared Fun You, destined to be a classic!
