The man’s certainly written enough quality songs to justify such a thread.

Sirius XM, in honor of Sir Paul’s 78th birthday last week, ran his Top 50 songs as voted by their listeners.

There were a few problems. First, the voters were given a list to choose from; I don’t know who chose that list. You had to pick 3 songs from last list + one that you could add in. You couldn’t pick two songs that weren’t on the list. 

It seems that voters ignored songs that were “only” 50% McCartney like “I Want To Hold Your Hand ,” “She loves your” or “A Day In The Life ” – unless they just didn’t think that the songs are that good or important. (But “We Can Work It Out ” made the list”)

Voters also completely left out songs from the last 38 years, suggesting a lack of familiarity with that body of work or, again, they just didn’t think the songs are that good.

With all that, “Too many people,” “I’m Down ,” “Rock Show,” and … “‘Til there was you” made the cut. “Paperback Writer ” and “Can’t Buy Me Love ” did not.

Really?

(Good news: “For No One ” made the list as did “Things We Said Today “

I suggest we make our own list.

The question is, do we limit it to 50 songs? At least 10 songs are automatic.

Should the list be divided into Beatles / 1970s / 1980s to present? This would solve the problem of people not being as familiar with one era or another (I’m thinking 1980s to the present).

I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts.
