I was telling my dad today of seeing McCartney live, Christmas 2011 at Manchester Arena. He stopped the set abruptly to play ‘Ram On ‘ on ukulele. My memory of it is that someone had slipped a note to him earlier in the day, asking him to play it. Anyone ever seen anything like that? I imagine the McCartney show is tightly scripted, so it came as a surprise.
P.S I’m new to the forum, please be gentle!

Paul’s first show back after his virus was in Albany New York. He did this excellent rare thing – not sure it was totally spontaneous as it’s a bit involved…

McCartney is very rigid in the way he performs live. Everything is calculated included what he says between songs. I don’t think he ever ad libs. I remember when I saw him with Wings in 1976 they started to play ‘Let Em In’ with the door bell opening and it didn’t work right so he stopped the song and started all over. I thought that was strange. Once you start a song, you need to keep rolling with it even if a mistake is made. I thought that was very unprofessional but heck, He’s Paul McCartney !!

Also, On My Way to Work was Albany-specific, seeing as he had gone back to work. :->
And someone who saw him once mentioned that his crowd interaction mentioned the signs he’d seen that day for the Gay Games. So I think he tries to incorporate some local flavor into his interactions.

Thanks for the awesome memories of the Albany show – I relive bits of it everyday. A for being scripted, so what? I’d pay to watch him read a script of the worst movie imaginable. And, I’d bet he would do it better than anyone else.

That was in Pittsburgh.
Also in Pittsburgh, he played the first verse and chorus of Yellow Submarine for Ringo’s birthday, that was pretty awesome. He also mentioned that it was his dad’s birthday.

@Zig, I totally agree with you about whether it was scripted – who cares – if we think it’s this priceless imagine what kind of memory that couple is holding between them now 🙂 I only put that because the topic was “rare/spontaneous” and I doubted this was spontaneous. Well and also to define it against those who said Paul’s shows were very rigid (showing one exception anyway). Definitely way cool though. I wished I was there and wished I was dude singing even more I look at this as an example of Paul’s joie de’ vivre – he was made aware of a way he could literally fill this couple’s world with a silly love song and did so. Paul was (and is) always the romantic

Wow, thanks for the videos and set list.
Looks like they made the right choices. I love “I’ve Just Seen A Face ” but there’s that annoying off-key voice in there.
I’m guessing the whole mini-concert will come out (on some $1000 deluxe box set including the autograph of everyone in the audience) [I just thought I’d beat MeanMrMustard to this 🙂 ]
