‘That Day Is Done’ is the tenth song on Paul McCartney’s eighth solo album Flowers In The Dirt. See more…

We kept the piano (Nicky Hopkins) and vocal and added some Hovis brass to give it a silver band/New Orleans marching band feel. I said to Elvis, ‘Oh yeah, I get it, New Orleans funeral music. House is finished, right?’ It’s turned out a nice track set against everything else on the album.

This song… I just- I’m dead. My brain can’t process this song… It’s like Paul is predicting the future, where I won’t ever get to see him and it’s all my fault. With my horrible parents and no credit (or debit) card to buy concert tickets, this is going to be true. And by the time I could possibly have enough to see him, it’ll already be too late. I just want to be in Paul’s arms and cry and hide from everyone and have the ability to love again. Since the day I discovered The Beatles, I’ve given my life and my soul to Paul. I refuse to love anyone else, and it hurts, but it’s worth it. Paul saved my life. I would’ve killed myself already if it wasn’t for him, I owe it all to him. I’m willing to stay trapped by my own emotions and destined to die for him, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Sorry, just needed to vent. Opinions on this song?

It is a very haunting, heart-felt song of his. It has such a definitive air about it.

I’m glad Paul has helped you stay in the land of the living. I’m sure he would want you to keep going to help keep The Beatles flame glowing strong in this world.

@MadisonMcCartney2267, I’m glad you’re still with us!

I always saw this song as sort of an acknowledgement of a mistake or a crappy day, and that it’s over and there’s nothing you can do about it, but to move on and try to make things better.

Looking through the lyrics, I realize that the second part of my interpretation about moving on. does not exist. I suppose the optimist in me sort of assumed the second part.
