Thanks to Richard on another thread, I found a site that talked about Paul first writing this in 1959. It also mentioned that Tim Rice put lyrics to it and Elaine Paige sang it. I found that version on YouTube but was not impressed, except they made it have a nice reggae feel. Then I found Paul himself doing it in 1979 live, I guess with Wings — as an instrumental. He picks up on the reggae feel (maybe because of Rice/Paige influence on his own song) and does some cool guitar work beyond what he does on the McCartney solo album.

I still wanna hear Jimmy Buffet do this song with steel drums.

A steel drum part would be a great addition to this song. My favorite part has always been the outro, which has one of Paul’s most interesting melodies in my opinion. Always wished that it had been extended into a full song.

What is the outro? You mean the Glasses part?  Before Glasses, I can’t think of anything terribly distinctive at the end except a fadeout.

I’m talking about the last 11 seconds, the only section with vocals. “nothing doin”

That’s a snatch of Suicide

It’s one of his earliest compositions, and I often joke that it’s the best evidence that he’s actually been fed all his best lyrics by a Victorian ghost.

My hot take is that after the Beatles split they went down the paths of spiritualism, solipsism, alcoholism, and Paul McCartney

That’s great, I never heard that before. I read about it though, Paul said he tried to recommend it to Frank Sinatra but Frank turned it down. I think Frank made a mistake.

Nice one Paul. I can’t believe i’ve never heard of “One Hand Clapping” Probably gonna get on that tonight if I can find it online. Though I didn’t hear the exact melody from Hot As Sun/Glasses which I still prefer.

Interestingly, New York TV channel WNEW used Hot as Sun as the theme music to its Popeye and Friends cartoon slot in the late ’70s, but instead of using it at the 33 and a third album speed, it played it back at 45rpm…

For comparison, as it appeared on McCartney in a medley with Glasses and Suicide
