Although written in 1970, ‘Great Day’ was recorded by Paul McCartney in 1992, and released on 1997’s Flaming Pie. See more…

‘Great Day’ is a song that Linda and I used to sing when the kids were very small, a simple acoustic number with a good feel. I’ve always liked the song but never really had an opportunity to record it, so during the ‘Calico Skies’ session with George Martin, since it had been so easy to record that one little acoustic thing, I told George that I had this song too. The song is identical to how we used to do it 25 years ago.

I searched for a thread about this song but did not find one.

Every time I listen to this song (which I love, BTW), I get this nagging feeling I’ve heard the melody before or at least one very similar to it.

Then, it hit me. It’s this song by one of their supporting acts from their first proper US Tour in 1964. She co-wrote and recorded it in 1969.

Does anyone else hear it? The lyrics are almost interchangeable as well:

When you’re wide awake – Say it for goodness sake – Put a little love in your heart.

– or –

Think of your fellow man – Lend him a helping hand – It’s gonna be a great day.

Sorry Zig, other than vaguely, I don’t hear it. I’d say if Jackie Shannon wanted to sue Paul for a “My Sweet Lord ” infraction, she’d have great difficulty making her case.

I didn’t know much about her.  The often dodgy Wikipedia informs us that, supposedly:

“DeShannon is currently an entertainment broadcast correspondent reporting Beatles band members’ news for the radio program Breakfast with the Beatles.” [but of course, Wikipedia’s entry on “Breakfast with the Beatles” does not mention Jackie Shannon at all…]

Wikipedia also lists two birth dates for her — either in 1941, or in 1944.

Most interesting, she apparently co-wrote “Bette Davis Eyes”.

The only thing I know about Jackie DeShannon was that she was an American singer who was Jimmy Page’s girlfriend/songwriting partner once upon a pre-Zeppelin time, and possibly inspired ‘Tangerine’.

The rhythm of the two songs’ melodies are similar, but not strikingly. As Funny Pineapple put it, I don’t think you could make a case out of it…

“Whos that coming round that corner? Will it be my friend”

from Big Barn Bed always sounded like

”If you’re wide awake, say it for goodness sake its gonna be a great day.”

from Great Day.

Thanks for the responses, all. I think B-bug put it best with the above quote. It was more of a nagging resemblance (where have I heard that before?) than a striking similarity.
