One of my favourite albums, not just of Paul’s, and recently got the remaster. It sounds fantastic, you can hear things so clearly like the pressing of the keys at the beginning of ‘Beware My Love’ which i never noticed before and the guitars in that are incredible now.

Highlights of the album for me have always been ‘Time To Hide’, ‘San Ferry Anne’, ‘Must Do That Something About It’ and ‘Beware My Love’. The vocals by Denny, Jimmy, Joe and Linda give the album a different vibe to all the other albums (even ‘Venus And Mars ) as it really does come across as a true band album instead of being Paul and the others supporting.

Whilst listening to ‘Silly Love Songs’ i got to wondering if the noises at the beginning resemble a factory machine line and are a tongue-in-cheek comment by Paul in response to critics complaining about him writing soppy songs like ‘My Love’ all the time: this being another off the conveyor belt (if that makes sense).

I hadn’t thought about that. I really like that explanation.

This is Paul’s most underrated album in my opinion. He still is pouring out his genius into his songwriting in the later half of the seventies, but this time he’s letting his bandmates sing lead on some songs.

However, my three favorites off this album are sung by Paul. They are Let Em In, Silly Love Songs, and She’s My Baby.

There was a period in my life where I listened to She’s My Baby on repeat over and over again. I love the melody and progression, but it was the silly lyrics that really amazed me. I was bewildered by the line “Like gravy down to the last drop, I keep mopping it up, she’s my baby.” I’m not quite sure what he’s talking about, but all of the “p’s” in the line work as a onomatopoeia. The repetitive p’s actually sound like what I imagine I would hear while mopping up gravy.

Some in Britain say they mop up the remaining gravy in a meal with their bread after finishing said meal, i’ve always thought Paul is using that comparison in ‘She’s My Baby’.

Listening to this for the first time… I find it tragically funny that ‘Wino Junko’ was written (in part) and sung by Jimmy McCulloch, who died of a drug overdose. a-hard-days-night-paul-10

Anyway, generally speaking, I’m liking it so far. paul-mccartney-thumb_gif

Also, the beginning of ‘Silly Love Songs’ reminds me (naturally) of the beginning of Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’, which is also kind of a ‘writing commercial pop muzak becuz cash’ kind of implication.

I’ve only heard four songs off Wings At The Speed Of Sound . Silly Love Songs is fantastic, Let ’em In is pretty good, Warm and Beautiful I’ve forgotten what it sounds like but I remember it being good, and I don’t remember Wino Junko at all but I know I’ve heard it.

Side note: Ringo has a song titled Speed of Sound. It’s on his Give More Love album.

not surprising…  ‘Medicine Jar’ was also his, wasn’t it?…  what’s “funny” is that I had no idea that he’d died, guess it shows how much attention that I pay to Wings…  ‘Medicine Jar’ was the better of the two, in my opinion, and a much more positive “pill freak” message…:-)

Medicine Jar was written by Jimmy in response to watching his friends suffer from addiction. I love Wino Junko and Medicine Jar, both very poignant anti-drug songs. Wino Junko has a great middle section

”till you go down again” with the delayed synth on top and the chorus on the vocals makes for a surreal effect.

Have had Must Do Something About It stuck in my head since the beginning of the day. Definitely a highlight of the album.

Haven’t mentioned it before so I’m going to now the guitar solo on The Note You Never Wrote is top notch. 2 years ago I would drive around with the remastered CD and turn it up all the way when the solo came on.

Ya, I’m just a fan of those 1st 3 songs you mentioned.  Not a big fan of this album. a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Now saying that, I’d love to hear it again since the remaster!  If @meanmistermustard  say’s it sounds good, than I believe it! a-hard-days-night-ringo-15

Lately I’ve been listening to the “specialty reissue” albums on the Internet Archive site as opposed to YouTube. It’s a little tidier and makes it easy to quickly review and compare the different versions of a song. Also the album covers, inserts, and LP/CD reproductions are available in the JPEG section under Download Options.

John Bohnam’s playing on Beware my Love is cool. Nothing too flashy but bes pounding away. The demos for Warm and Beautiful as well as Pauls vocal tale on Must Do Something About It are phenomenal

I have more vivid memories of getting this album than any other, for whatever reason.  I remember getting out of high school, going to the record store at the mall, and then walking home and playing it in my room before supper.  Very vivid.  Unfortunately, I remember the album as something of a disappointment.  There were a few good songs on there that I liked, but the overall impression was kind of weak.

I liked Beware My Love, young rocker that I was.  Let Em In reminded me of Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover because of the way the marching beat drums were so integral – not as good of a song, of course, but pleasant enough.

I always thought the Silly Love Songs sound at the beginning was supposed to be a ball and chain.  I had read an article written by someone who had visited the studio while they were recording the song.  The writer described this monster bass riff and this incredibly heavy rock song that Paul was working on, so when I actually heard the pop song that it was, it was quite a surprise.  Not at all what the writer seemed to be describing.  Great bass riff though.
