Actually, and I love The album, but I absolutely hate Here Today .

I agree with you on this song. I feel that he sings it with very little emotion. I am not moved to tears after hearing it.

I did like the Citi Field Live version where his voice cracks due to him get very emotional. He needs to do that more often.

He doesn’t sing it very well. Martin’s arrangment is quite beautiful but it doesn’t save the song.

I think Here today is a nice song, but I prefer the live version. I dunno why, but some songs (this one and Calico Skies) I prefer the live versions.

Whatever.

Agreed, paulsbass. His singing is superb on this track. I can't listen to it much, though, because it is so sad. I would say this is one of the only pure autobiographical songs Paul has ever written, and for that alone, it deserves a high rating. I'm sure some of his other songs are autobiographical in some ways, but this is one of the only ones that is so obvious about it.

Look, I accept paulsbass that you like the song a lot, but to brush me off in one word was mean. Although I shouldn’t have used hate. I certainly isn’t bad, just not particularly good.

I didn’t realize that I was being rude in stating an opinion. I certainly didn’t mean to offend, but I don’t apologize for my opinion, but for the fact I offended you when I certainly didn’t mean to. I love this album, and certainly agree with you on Dress Me Up As A Robber, my favorite track. But, and this applies to all non – spam posters, I never mean to offend because of difference of opinion. NEVER.

A threat that has half of the original content – yippee.a-hard-days-night-paul-3

Just finished listening to this as my ride thru solo Paul continues.

Overall the strengths rescue the album from the weaknesses and make it damn fine.

The Negatives

  • Some of the backing vocals distract from the songs: Tug Of War Take It Away, I’ll Give You A Ring (B-side of the Take It Away single). There is a monitor mix of Take It Away and without that horrible “in his hands”and “down, down” crap its a much better song.
  • Everything on What’s That You’re Doing except for the main vocals are dreadful; sounds like a crappy home demo on a cheap keyboard has been layered with vocals to try disguise the fact yet doesn’t.
  • Ebony And Ivory is so damn cheesy and incredibly dated. It may have been a number one but it has not aged well. The b-side Rainclouds is a fine track and deserves more than being forgotten or overlooked.

The Positives

  • Here Today , Somebody Who Cares, Ballroom Dancing, The Pound Is Sinking and Wanderlust are excellent tracks, some of the highlights of Pauls catalogue, certainly his 80’s period.
  • The lead vocals on Take It Away and Tug Of War are really strong making the songs very listenable. A bit of time spent on remixing them to omit the previously mentioned issues and they would be really good instead of just good. What’s That You’re Doing? also has great lead vocals by Paul and Stevie Wonder, someone should extract those and add them to a much better instrumental track as it would be well worth the effort.
  • Get It is a fun track that passes quickly as is Dress Me Up As A Robber, any longer and they would begin to grate on me. Be What You See passes so quickly that before you begin wondering why the hell its on the album its gone.

And it should be mentioned that Take It Away and Tug Of War on Wingspan differ slightly from the album cuts as they are the single mixes that omit a fade-in (the former) and opening sound effects (the latter).

This is definitely in my top five Paul albums (including wings)

Tug Of War : really like the string work on this. crying out for a live performance starting with Paul alone with his acoustic guitar then the band comes in at the middle.

Take It Away: a forgotten gem from Pauls career no one really remembers. The end backing vocals remind me of 10CC’s ‘I’m Not In Love’

Somebody Who Cares: beautiful song and great guitar work (actually played by paul)

What’s That Your Doing: weakest one on the album for me. It’s a decent (mostly Stevie Wonder) song but its rather overstretched, like a lot of Pauls other material.

Here Today : contrary to whats been said up-thread, i think the vocals are very good and emotive

Ballroom Dancing: silly lyrics but great music. Only Issues is the sequencing, coming right after Here Today it somewhat spoils the vibe (by i understand on vinyl this wouldn’t have been an issue since its on the other side)

The Pound Is Sinking: probably my favorite from the album. Amazing vocals on the ‘Hear Me Love’ section

Wanderlust: some obscure lyrics but otherwise another brilliant song

Get It: nice duet with the legend Carl Perkins. One of my Grandads favorites when he heard this album

Be What You See: this is only meant as a link between songs and i think it functions effectively

Dress Me Up As A Robber: again obscure lyrics but brilliant music. on side note i heard Paul performed this live just one for some charity event, Is there any video of this.

Ebony And Ivory : he could have chosen a better closer but a decent song what can get tiring sometimes.

Agree with your 10CC Take It Away similarity Mr Bellamy, personally i dont think it adds anything to the song except annoying me. The string arrangements throughout are very good, not surprising tho considering George Martin was heavily involved.

In thinking about my line for the Lyric Last Letter Game, I thought about these lines from Bluebird

Fly away through the midnight air
As we head across the sea
And at last we will be free

And that made me break out singing Wanderlust.

Light out wanderlust
Head us out to sea

Take us from the dark
Out where we can see

Light out wanderlust
Help us to be free

Now my mind just went here.

“Turned Out”

I took a trip into the ocean
High emotion filled me with desire
I had to see what I was fighting
That kept inviting me to take it higher
Well looking back it didn’t hurt me
It did something for my soul

I wonder why Paul thinks about going out into a large body of water to discover things and be set free?

EDIT: I put this in the NEW thread also.

Additionally there are the lines from Winedark Open Sea

and the rest of the song.

I adore that track.

By far his best ’80s album.  Yeah, “Ebony And Ivory ” has been overplayed over the years, but whatever.  And I LOVE “What’s That You’re Doing?” — it never fails to get me dancing.  a-hard-days-night-paul-11

It’s worth it, @Beatlebug. It sounds a lot better.

Part of me wishes Paul had created new arrangements for songs like Ebony And Ivory , but of course he hasn’t. I think some of those ‘OMG-could-this-sound-more-eighties?!’ tunes would actually sound quite good with the same vocals, but a different score. Even taking out the synths and replacing that with guitars would help, I think.

Anyway, the remix sounds wonderful. I’m glad I bought it.

Any major differences you can mention? This was a favourite album for a while, Paul really sings well, and I often think of Be What You See, always been a bit of an earworm. I heard Say Say Say for the first time in years in a supermarket this week (it was recorded during the album sessions), and you can hear that it’s written from the period.

It’s difficult to put into words, but it just all sounds a lot more clear. If I compare Here Today to the remixed version, the vocals stand out more, you can here the nuances better. Yet, at the same time, the instruments all sound more pronounced too. I can’t put my finger on it, but the difference is very much audible. It’s like everything went from 2D to 3D, if you get what I mean.

Oh, and I seem to have read somewhere, I think it was something someone from MPL said on Facebook, that some of the vocals have been replaced. I don’t know if that’s true and in which songs, though.

That’s interesting if vocals were redone, I can’t think why though! And interesting about the remaster, perhaps the initial cd master was a rush job and this one takes more advantage of the format.
