An outtake from the album sessions.

Vastly different to the released version.

Geez, Louise. What a difference. I’m glad he released the one he did.

One of his best albums. Similar in a way to Lennon’s Walls And Bridges . Very lush. Hope of Deliverance is a classic. Was lucky enough to be given press box tickets via the man himself for the 1993 Melbourne Australia concert at the MCG. Easily the best concert I’ve seen or will ever see. Gold standard. Paul in his prime. Master of ALL ceremonies.

Well this album has been a slow burn for me. On my first tour through his albums* I listened to it once and moved on. There was another album I liked less that I listened to a few times to try to give it a chance, but this one just didn’t really register with me.

I’ve been listening to it again, and I’m starting to suspect it will become a real comfort album for me.

Off The Ground . Great opener for a chill comfort album. Seemed insubstantial on first listen, but it’s a grower.

Looking for Changes is almost great. The verse is too on the nose, and it front loads the worst lyrics. Makes me wish he’d had John to help him paul-mccartney

Hope of Deliverance. Great song. Have you ever noticed the way Paul’s line on “Someday, one day” stays level and Linda’s harmony rises for the second phrase?derek-taylor_01_gif

Mistress and Maid. Very evocative. I want to give that dude a kick. The “Look At Me ” reminds me of a couple of John lyrics ahdn_paul_02

I Owe It All to You. There’s something really lovely about hearing Paul talk about being happy. I spend a lot of time listening to (and thinking about) his songs of longing, but I like him and I love this for him. (I want a Linda Smiley).

Biker Like an Icon is not nearly as close to great as LfC, but I like some of the phrases he’s playing with. Should have let it stew for longer.

Peace In the Neighbourhood. I’m not a huge fan of his delivery on this one, but it’s a nice song.

Golden Earth Girl. “In eggshell seas”/”In excelsis”. In toto some of his better lyrics imo, not necessarily very meaningful in a way you could pin down, but they capture something.

The Lovers That Never Were got a much better treatment than any of the Costello numbers on Flowers (though I still prefer the demo). One of my favourite Paul songs.

Get Out of My Way is … fine. I don’t think I’d bother skipping it, but meh. I think part of my problem with it is that it doesn’t fit the vibe of the album, but it’s produced like it does.

Winedark Open Sea is one of those ones where he connects to something so deep. Beautiful.

C’Mon People. Nice closer. This adds to the feeling that the core of this album is Paul saying “let’s have another go at making the world a better place”. (Which is supported by the snippet of “Consciously Conscious” at the end.)

* I say my first tour through, but of course I keep finding albums I missed. The man is a machine!

This has always been a solid Macca album for me, nothing wrong with it but also nothing that really stands out, at least not to the degree of the top songs on his top albums. Last time I listened to it in the bath I liked it better than ever, I Owe It All To You and Winedark Open Sea might now be the standout trcks in terms of musical beauty.

Hope Of Deliverance, for some weird reason, must be one of his most famous songs in Switzerland. Other than Live And Let Die (because I’m a Bond fan) it was the only Macca song I already clearly knew when I became a fan, having heard it on the radio quite often as a kid without knowing who sings. But among the fans I never got the impression the song (or the whole album) are that well known and well regarded.

I always hear that “In excelsis” over the “In eggshell seas” also.  I suppose he did this on purpose, but I’m not entirely sure?  This is actually my favorite song on the album, such a nice melody.  IMO it’s about a painting, maybe inspired by his painting.  The “eggshell finish” gives it away.  If  I’m right.

Today I was feeling silly and singing “Pigs in a sunbeam”.  Sorry Paul, no disrespect intended, it’s a lovely song.

I think it’s mostly a fine album and with a remix (certainly of the title track) would be one of Paul’s best. ‘Looking For Changes’ is embarrassingly naff but aside from that there isn’t much which is bad.

I always remember ‘BLAI’ getting criticism from a magazine due to the title but it’s a very dark song which I like.

Like with ‘FITD’ there are also a number of b-sides etc that make up a fabulous bonus disc, which actually exists as the second disc of ‘Off The Ground – The Complete Works’ (it was a non-UK European release I think but could be wrong)

1. ‘Long Leather Coat’
2. ‘Keep Coming Back to Love’
3. ‘Sweet Sweet Memories’
4. ‘Things We Said Today
5. ‘Midnight Special’
6. ‘Style Style’
7. “I Can’t Imagine
8. ‘Cosmically Conscious’ (Complete)
9. ‘Kicked Around No More’
10. ‘Big Boys Bickering’
11. ‘Down to the River’
12. ‘Soggy Noodle’

From: The Paul McCartney Project

[…] Off The Ground : The Complete Works is a two-disc set released in Germany and the Netherlands. This edition included McCartney’s rare use of swear words in the song “Big Boys Bickering”, a protest song. Other notable songs on this edition are “Long Leather Coat” (a Lady McCartney composed protest song) and “I Can’t Imagine ”. Even though the album is called the “complete works”, it is missing two B-sides and three promo remixes. Those tracks are “Deliverance” and “Deliverance (Dub Mix)”, dance-oriented reworkings of the song “Hope of Deliverance”, released as B-sides of the “C’mon People” CD single #1, and the three promo remixes of “Off The Ground ” released to American radio, namely the Bob Clearmountain remix, the Keith Cohen remix, and the Keith Cohen AC remix. Also, when the iTunes Store added his catalogue of music in 2007, they included “I Can’t Imagine ” as an exclusive bonus track on the album. […]

Wow, I can see why that didn’t get a wider release mal-evans (sorry to yuck your yum, but it’s definitely not for me). Did the woman kill the man in Long Leather Coat? a-hard-days-night-ringo-6

The lyrics of Sweet Sweet Memories are possibly his worst (closely followed by Style Style).

I really like Cosmically Conscious though, and Kicked Around No More is great. Big Boys Bickering needs more oomph, but has potential.
