I find
- ‘Young Blood’ is very average pop (a major let down when i first heard it as it was Paul’s first UK single after the Beatles Anthology and there was a lot of anticipation).
- ‘The Songs We Were Singing’ to be meh (i hate the change to the chorus).
- the line “I go back so far I’m in front of me’ (‘The World Tonight’) always reminds of a smug, sanctimonious McCartney interview from the time of the albums release: Paul was doing his fake downplaying act that is very evident in the Anthology documentary when he talked about the Beatles.
- that looking at the track listing reveals that ‘If You Wanna’ exists, I detest the song – did on first listen, still do now.
Throw away ‘Really Love You’ and ‘Used To Be Bad’ as well and that’s 6 out of 14 i very rarely ever want to play or remember.

Offline The first four tracks I’m not huge on, but from Young Boy on, (except for Used To Be Bad) I think flaming pie offers some of Pauls best, wisest, and most mature music of his career.

Offline “We could sit, smoke a pipe, and talk about the vast intricacies of life”
Not a fan of that lyric. Especially coming from a genius like Paul.
But you think Calico Skies, Flaming Pie , Souvenir, Little Willow are tracks that drag? That’s some of Pauls best work right there.
Not to mention Beautiful Night featuring Ringo, one of my all time favorite songs.

Used to Be Bad, Really Love You, and Heaven on a Sunday(ish) drag. I didn’t say I didn’t like the tracks that come after Young boy, I was just saying that the tracks that drag are after young boy. I do love pretty much all the tracks on this album, I was just trying to say that i love the first 3 tracks.

Yeah pretty much. Beautiful Night is probably my second favorite Solo Paul song

Offline It’s been a long time since I listened to this album but just by chance I heard Beautiful Night today and I’d forgotten what a good song it is. As with a lot of Paul’s solo stuff if the lyrics were better it would have elevated the song much more and I’m not overly keen on all of them. I love the outro and Ringo’s vocal works so well to add to the real Beatle rock out.

Offline Bought this via download when the deluxe archive came out, no interest in paying for any physical version, and was reminded of how much I detest some of the songs. The first three are instantly to be missed; I might have been able to bear ‘The World Tonight’ but I am forever reminded of seeing Paul being so overwhelming smug explaining how pleased he was over the line “I go back so far, I’m in front of me” so I instantly hate it, the first and third are dull and, well, crap and you throw in the atrocious ‘Really Love You’.
What I do like are ‘Souvenir’, ‘Great Day’, ‘Calico Skies’, ‘Some Days’ and ‘Beautiful Night’. ‘Flaming Pie ‘ and ‘Heaven On A Sunday’ are ok but not aged well, ‘Little Willow’ is alright. The rest I can do without hearing again which is half an album. I actually prefer some of the b-sides like ‘I Love This House’,’ Same Love’ and ‘Love Come Tumbling Down’.
Not got around to the demos etc.
And fair play to Paul for having almost all of the tracks available for download at a sensible price. I know one or two are missing being exclusive to the uber-expensive boxes that come with the recipe for a flaming pie, a replica bag of flour (but no flour itself) and your own gas supply, but I will support the project if made available sensibly and priced properly.

Offline Yeah, I was disappointed by the supplemental content for the album. How many different minor variant rough/home recordings of these tracks did we need? Those ’80s castoffs that appeared on Oobu Joobu (along with “Love Come Tumbling Down” and “Same Love”) should’ve been saved for either the eventual Press To Play or Back in the U.S.S.R. Archive Collection releases (since none of them appeared on the Flowers In The Dirt set). Also disappointed “Tropic Island Hum” wasn’t included despite being initially recorded during this era. I will say, “Looking for You” would’ve been the better obviously-ad libbed song to have been included on the final album rather than “Really Love You.” Of course, “Broomstick” is better than both, but is tonally different from those two.

My tastes have since refined. I still enjoy “If You Wanna”, but I have since learned to like “Really Love You”. It gives me kind of a McCartney II vibe, especially the high pitched voice part.

I spent £18 and got everything bar the ‘Skeleton’ track (I forget the correct name), the book and all the other crap that comes in the box (e.g. a small sachet of vegan flour from 1997 that you can use to make your own ‘Flaming Pie ‘). I think that’s a decent price for 46 tracks and not much more than any highlights set would have cost. Maybe I’d have the bought the box if sensibly priced, like the 2018 ‘Imagine ‘ set, but that’s clearly not going to happen with any of these releases.

I’m well aware of that… but then by that logic, “Lunch Box/Odd Sox” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reggae” should’ve both been released on McCartney II , since that’s when they were both first released. To muddle things further, “Little Woman Love” and “Country Dreamer” were both redundantly re-included on Red Rose Speedway after initially being included on Ram and Band On The Run , respectively. I just wish they’d establish some hard consistency with these non-album tracks — either include them with the albums whose sessions from which they were initially recorded, or else the period during which they were first released, and stop waffling between the two.

I try not to ask too many questions when it comes to why things were released the way they were in the Paul Archives. There’s usually not much rhyme or reason to it
