Roger (Wogew) who runs Wogblog has really owned the coverage of this release. He’s been first with just about all the info.

Can buy me love! Please consider supporting the Beatles Bible on Amazon

^^ He has, and he’s already got info with images on the sampler.

Just got word that there’s going to be produced a 14-track limited edition sampler from “On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2″, both on vinyl and CD. Of course, this will only be a promotional item, not intended for sale.

The New York Times has an analysis on the release:

When Capitol Records released “The Beatles Live At The BBC ” to great fanfare in 1994, Beatles collectors lamented that the two-disc set barely scratched the surface of the vast trove of recordings the band made for the BBC between March 1962 and June 1965. Many of those radio recordings were already on a 10-disc bootleg set, after all, and in the 19 years since then, bootleggers have come up with another three discs’ worth of material.

But Capitol and Apple, the Beatles’ own label, are determined to catch up. “On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2,” another two discs, will be released Nov. 11. It will include 63 tracks, including 40 songs and 23 spoken segments, with interviews, introductions and studio banter. A remastered version of the 1994 set will be released at the same time.

Can someone help me here:

What is with photoshopping the length of George’s tie?  It really bothers me, because it makes no sense whatsoever.

The only thing I can come up with is that someone in the art department thought that today’s music buyers might not be able to comprehend that men used to tuck their ties into their pants, so they made an awkward modern tweak.

The actual cover is the real photo. The tie was lengthened, not shortened. As I say above somewhere, all I can think is that whoever did the colourisation of the picture decided to lengthen George’s tie to match John and Ringo’s ties, and when it was seen by those who had to clear things, there was an insistence that the tie was put back to its original length.

Here are other photos from the day that show it.

And here’s the cover photo as it was originally printed in the ’60s:

Always happy to help. And I agree, the bottom of George’s tie does look odd, which if you’ve seen the “leaked” cover, will instantly make you think it’s been shortened. I would have thought the same if I didn’t know the original Dezo Hoffman photo. I suppose George is wearing a tie with a square instead of v end.

Mysteries get solved here.

Anybody else notice the membership bump in the last few weeks, since BBC2 was announced?

Hmm – and maybe “New” has something to do with it too?  Either way, the more the merrier :)

My recommendation for whoever doesn’t already have it, is to just save yourself the money and time and download the Purple Chick collection. THAT is the definitive collection of the Beatles at the BBC.

That’s up for debate. Updates of a few additional performances in superior sound have surfaced since as well as additional chat so you would need to go elsewhere to ensure you had every last thing (if that’s what you want). One highly rated source of the bbc tracks is Unsurpassed Broadcasts by Hobnail, tho again more chat has surfaced since and I think a few better source tapes as well. There will be others sets as well, a few people would still say Great Dane’s 1993 collection is a must. And there may even be better quality material on the upcoming Apple release.

True. Thank goodness for the internet and torrents, or else one would go broke trying to keep up with all of the improvements in sound and source material!

And thankfully nowadays there are collections (some of the best compiled by fans) that have all, or pretty much all available material together so we don’t have to find 40 bootlegs to have everything as it once was.

I have a lot of bootlegged material, but I make a point to buy the official releases.  I do it out of the principle of respect for artists who should be paid for their work, but also so I feel I can justify owning bootlegs because I already have the best possible official releases available.

Same here. I just know that I probably won’t listen to this after the first 1 or 2 times.

I will listen at least twice, I’m kind of obsessive with new stuff and always listen at least twice to give it a go; first impressions aren’t always the best.  I usually then try and listen again a year or so down the track to give time the chance to do its thing.
