I guess you cant listen to it. It seems to be filesharing. but that website has everything! All of A/B Road, Decca Tapes, Quarrymen stuff. And you can stream, you dont need to download, so hopefully you can get it to work.

Wow, I’d never heard the bit about George Harrison ‘s passport before!  I do remember hearing that there were three complete copies of the nagra reels; 1 each in Europe, Japan, and Nth America.  Which explains why stuff kept coming out after the tapes mentioned in the article were recovered…

Anyone who would like to get an understanding of the January 1969 ‘Get Back ‘ rehearsals (which eventually yielded the ‘Let It Be ‘ movie, album, Beatles singles and other assortments) but doesn’t know or want to get into listening to the endless hours of bootlegs or have to read the books may find episodes of ‘Something About The Beatles’ useful. The first podcast is titled ‘Winter of Our Discontent” Part One – Twickenham‘ and the synopsis reads

In this special extended episode, Richard and Robert provide a thorough day-by-day overview of the first two weeks of the “Get Back ” / Let It Be sessions, including George’s walk-out. Songs include: “Get Back ,” “All Things Must Pass ,” “Let It Be ,” and “Madman.”

Part Two isn’t up now but no doubt will be in the near future.

I’m over halfway thru and its really good, well worth a listen.

I’m nearly quarter way through it, and it’s a fair assessment so far… x)

It gets better does part 1. Easily one of the best Beatles podcasts i’ve heard in a good while.

I found the podcasts an interesting listen, but was overall disappointed. Their (Richard and Robert) opinions seem so similar on that time period that while Paul is criticised for some of his behaviour and attitude during the sessions, there is no real debate over whether Paul pushing too hard to keep them working actually contributed to the deteriorating relationships and made things worse.

They all needed time to lick their wounds after the White Album , yet virtually the day the mix is completed, Paul’s starting to rush them into the next project. Yes, he can see they’re in trouble; yes, he thinks they can get over the hump in the road by keeping on keeping on; but there is no discussion from what I heard that Paul simply got it wrong.

Up until that time, I can’t think of a shorter break between albums (barely a month), and Paul was trying to thrust them into the next thing even faster than that (the proposed Roundhouse gigs in December 1968, that The Beatles Book Monthly was even running a competition to win tickets to).

These two seem to have a similar view, nodding their heads sagely and wondering what else Paul was meant to do. I get it from Paul’s side, I get why he thought what he was attempting was right, but I question if he was. They seem to stick to accepting there was nothing else Paul could have done.

I, myself, wonder what would have happened if Paul had realised that they needed and would benefit from a break, kind of like the accidental break they had between Rubber Soul  and Revolver  (Brian had built in time for a third film at the beginning of 1966 which didn’t happen).

Always interesting to hear two people discussing. but more interesting when their opinions aren’t quite so similar. I could easily make an argument for Paul messing up by getting them back together so soon, sadly Winter of Our Discontent doesn’t really examine that question.

What might have happened if they’d took a decent of amount time off, and reconvened on April 2nd rather than January 2nd?

I have to agree with Ron, it is a little disappointing. Only because I’ve watched the “Winter Of Discontent DVD”, and would rather hear/see it straight from the Beatles, like it was, but I guess for anyone who hasn’t seen it, this would be the next best thing,  as it was an eye opener, seeing them not getting along. apple01

Ignoring the songs that eventually became Let It Be what does everyone think are THE best remaining tracks from the sessions if you could just have one LP’s worth, 12-14 tracks? I’d include Adagio For Strings, Suzy’s Parlour, The Palace of the King of Birds and Madman for definite but then get a bit stuck as don’t want to include anything too fragmentary or half-hearted.

I like There You Are, Eddie but you do have to know that it’s about an actual dog. It doesn’t quite hold up on its own like Martha My Dear .

I like a lot of Old Soak and Mr Moonlights picks, and agree that anything too fragmenty would be odd for an official release considering how many solid takes there are during the rehearsals. Id add

one of the extended Dig Its (likely to be in the Disney+ series),

Some All Things Must Pass (with wah of course)

as far as covers and demos go, Id need to go back through for the best versions with all four or five guys playing a considerable chunk of the song. Some of my favorite slates are the start of rehearsal because you get a glimpse of what John Paul or George were listening to and working on at the time. Ringo always listening, backing them up in the way only he could, also working out some really cool ideas.

‘I Lost My Little Girl’, the few ‘Anthology’oldies but unedited.

There are a few piss takes I love like ‘House Of The Rising Sun’ (which any casual listener would think is horrifying and most Beatles fans a disgrace to their legacy) and ‘Rock And Roll Music ’. ‘Commonwealth’ is great fun. ‘
Watching Rainbows’ is a favourite of mine but again folk will moan as it turns into a repetitive slow jam. Another that comes to mind is the brilliant jam ‘I’ve Told You Before…’ which features Heather doing her inner Yoko before George comes in with a more regular vocal. Well worth hearing.

I’m a little surprised ‘Love Me Do ’ isn’t included in the box since it’s a very different slower version of their first hit, presumably it’s in the tv series.

It will be interesting to see if what’s now known as ‘No Pakistanis’ will feature anywhere considering how the lyrics could be taken when out of context, especially since it is 50 years ago. The Sun ran the story it in the late 80’s but was a different time then; no doubt todays social media would probably have hysterics and cause a lot of hassle and garbage to be spouted.

There is a ton of really good material which should get released. It appears most will be left on bootlegs and for fans to extract from the documentary.
