Expert Textpert is right, and I don’t remember where else I read that besides the Norman book. (Not that I don’t still find Norman questionable at times). She had an affair with a border who was a student, much younger than she. (Kinda’ like the Mona Best, Neil Aspinal thingy). I think the boarder backed that up. That’s why I thought I had remembered that Mimi was single when she got custody of John. She wasn’t legally single, but in a marriage of convenience. George had tons of love to give to John cuz he couldn’t give it to anyone else. Wonder why the student (can’t remember his name) was able to seduce her???

I’ve read about the supposed affair elsewhere as well (which doesn’t mean it’s true). The virginity angle, though, I find irrelevant, distasteful and highly questionable.

John’s half-sister, Julia Baird wrote about the affair in her book too. According to her, Mimi was 50 & the “boarder” was 24 and Mimi was a virgin. She says she got her story from another boarder who could confirm it. Still sounds very sketchy to me! I’d never heard about it before!

It’s the kind of thing anyone would do: sleep with the lodger, write a letter about it to someone including your sexual history, get it printed in a book. Who hasn’t?
And its not like a young man who has bagged himself a Beatle-Aunt and an older woman wouldn’t embellish things a bit when talking to mates afterwards.
Sceptical to say the least.

I think this is another one of those things I’ll just let go over my head, especially considering that the source is questionable. As everyone else has said, would Mimi really share such intimate details with anyone? I think not.

I’d buy it. It’s been documented that George was more a “good catch” for Mimi than someone she loved. I don’t know if I believe she was a virgin, but supposedly this young fellow proposed marriage before going back to Oz.

I would agree with you, but Yoko hired him to write this bio as the authorized Lennon bio. She “unauthorized” it when viewing the final manuscript because she thought he was too tough…on HER! She apparently had no issue with the bits about John, nor did the other sources who reviewed the final manuscript. So as odd and bizarre as some bits in it are, chances are more likely than not that they’re true. What makes me nervous about his Paul bio is his unabashed John worship and his unabashed Paul hatred!

I knew I had read about Mimi’s relationship/marriage to George in another source besides Norman’s book. SO, I did some research in my “Lennon library” last night. I found a reference to the fact Mimi’s marriage to George was never consumated in Albert Goldman’s book “The Lives of John Lennon .” More important than that, I found a whole chapter on it and Mimi’s affair with her boarder in Julia Baird’s second book on John (“Imagine This”). She confirmed that Mimi was a virgin. She references Mimi’s sister “Mater” telling her (Julia ) about this before she died, and she also says that her mum, Julia , also told her the marriage was never consumated. That is why Mimi wanted John so badly, she knew she would not conceive a child on her own. As for her affair with the boarder, Julia Baird tracked him down, wrote to him, and met with him after Mater had mentioned to her that Mimi was having an affair and might move to New Zealand to marry him. The boarder’s name was Michael Fishwick. He was a bio-chem student at Liverpool Univ. He came to live with the Lennons in 1951. The affair did not start until 1955, and lasted until 1960. Michael confirmed to Julia that Mimi was a virgin when they started the affair (Mimi was 50, he was 24). They were often intimate in the house using the room next door to John’s (John was 15 then). John often spent time at Julia ‘s at this point allowing them to have Mendips to themselves. In 1960, Michael was offered a 3-yr. research post in New Zealand. Mimi was intending to join him there and they would marry, but at the last moment, the funding fell through and he didn’t go. At this point, Michael entered the National Service and they drifted apart. John had some real dysfunction in his life…it is amazing he did as well as he did. As for Mimi, her last words, according to Julia Baird were “I’m a wicked woman.” It is ironic because here Mimi was doing the same thing she was accusing Julia of doing with “Twitchy” Dykins making Julia the “unfit” mother.

Gosh… maybe it is true then. Didn’t think Mimi the type to have an affair with someone half her age. Well, the age thing is irrelevant, I didn’t think her the type to have any kind of affair.

Actually, you’ve got it backward. Yoko was pleased with his white-washing job on her, but felt that he was “too mean” to John. It’s all recorded in the epilogue to Norman’s book.

F**k, I keep getting that wrong! I haven’t read the book in about a year but I do remember that now, you’re right. It’s too bad, because even though the world deserves to know the real Lennon, warts and all, they also need to know all of the awful s**t Yoko has said/done. The last thing this planet needs is *MORE* Yoko whitewash!

For those who want a story that leans the other direction, I recommend The Last Days of John Lennon by Frederic Seaman. Plenty of reasons to dislike Yoko in there.
But I’m still buying her new album!

I just wondered why Julia Baird was so anxious to chase down the truth. I mean, I understand her doing it for herself, but to publish it in a book about her half-brother…I don’t understand that. Guess everyone who could/would be hurt by it are dead, but still…it is kinda’ disturbing. And, it was her second book on John..she’d already had one payday writing about him. Go figure.

These details are juicy titbits that would provide a nice headline in an article or point of note in a discussion. Why its even relevant to be commentated on and included is a mystery.
I’m not sure about Baird, but Norman probably included it as part of the overall picture of John Lennon that he painted in his biography as a gay person surrounded by gay people. “Not that there’s anything wrong with being gay,” as they say.

Mimi and George never had sex? for how many years? Perhaps the marriage is only for convenience. I am just wondering about the gender of George. Maybe Philip Norman know’s much more about it.

I think some people just chose not to, in the same way that you may chose to get involved in that way.
What do you mean, you wonder about the gender of George?
