Just checking out John’s stuff on iTunes and there’s a jazz album that was just released on June 19th titled ‘The Universe of John Lennon ‘. It’s got Beatles and solo songs, everything from Rain to Across The Universe to Working Class Hero .

JAZZ!??

I have to admit, some of it’s not terrible, lol.

If you check it out, I’d be interested in reading your thoughts/comments. Whatever you do, don’t shoot the messenger!

Jazz is GREAT and I’ll not have any anti-jazz sentiments here, no matter if Lennon claimed to hate the stuff! (And hey he and Yoko recorded with alto-man John Tchicai once, anyways! And what about the MJQ getting signed to Apple?!)

Anyways this isn’t really news – Herbie Hancock did that “Imagine Project” thing a couple of years ago.

Lennon hated jazz?

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.

He apparently used to claim to dislike it during his art-college student days. (Of course it’s just as likely that he really just hated the sorts of people – beatniks! – who listened to it at the time. There was a real divide between rock ‘n rollers and jazzbos back in those days, of course.)

Makes me think of how in the early days they would try and pass Long Tall Sally off as a tune by Lead Belly (not that he was jazz just the type of music the clubs allowed).

Update on the Lennon-hated-jazz thing: I found passing praise of Stan Getz (specifically the 1964 Getz/Gilberto album collaboration) in the February Playboy Interview of the Beatles.

http://www.reocities.com/donal…..layboy.htm

This guy has compiled EVERY mention of the Beatles in Playboy magazine from 1964 through ’72! Including innumerable ads for record albums with a stray cover of “Michelle ” or random out-of-context use of the phrase “hard day’s night”. Interesting reading.

That is a great album; interesting to see John liked it.

Yeah, that’s a good’un!
(Not to mention a #2 chart hit, kept out of the top spot by “Meet The Beatles” – a sign of the future)

Jazz is the worst kind of music (if we can even call the monstrosity music) ever created or imagined.

Cannot stand Modern Jazz, the kind they play in trendy cafes and pubs that lasts for what seems like hours yet does nothing at all ever, sounds like folk have got together inadvertantly and are trying to follow each other by going nowhere. It is sooooooo boring and quickly annoying.

One of my worst nightmares would be listening to a Jazz Beatle Album. Man alive! I’d give up any and all secrets i had just to get it to stop.
