Play inspired by cystic fibrosis and…John Lennon
John Lennon and Me, and cystic fibrosis too
Notre Dame play explores difficult subject of youth and terminal illness
CARLETON PLACE – Most young people believe themselves to be invincible.
Young people with cystic fibrosis know all too well that they likely won’t live beyond the age of 25.
Reconciling the youthful zest for live with the grim spectre of an all-too-soon death proved to be the making of a touching performance looking at young people with cystic fibrosis on the stage of Notre Dame Catholic High School last week.
“If you take a straw and just put it in your mouth, and plug your nose, and try to breathe, that’s what it’s like to breathe with cystic fibrosis,” said Joe Gallagher, the play’s director and a Notre Dame teacher. “It’s an incredibly tough disease. Most people with it die before they’re 25,” he said during last Friday’s performance before the Grade 7 and 8 classes on the cafeteria’s stage.
The play, John Lennon and Me, a reference to the lead character’s fanatical devotion to the Beatles star, also had two evening performances on June 1 and 2, with all of the proceeds going towards cystic fibrosis research. Gallagher told the students that he had met a young person with the disease, which inspired him to mount this production.
Life is what happens when your busy making other plans. John Lennon
