I have seen some suggestions that rather than being two albums with the same name by John and Yoko, that these are two albums by the Plastic Ono Band called John Lennon and Yoko Ono.  Anyone else heard this speculation anywhere?

I haven’t seen it but can see why it could be that way considering the same musicians were used for both albums, recorded around the same time, and the artwork was almost identical.

That’s interesting. I’ve never thought about it like that. In books it’s normally referred to as John Lennon /Plastic Ono Band.

Same here…wonder which was their actual intent?

As I said in my OP – speculation based on some discussion on a website I can’t find for the life of me now.

Their reasoning was basically around 2 points:

  1. If they were correct then the albums had different names – they weren’t sure it was intended to have two albums with the exact same name
  2. Something to do with the positioning of the band name and album name on some versions of the LP

As I said – pure speculation – but intriguing.

My speculation; maybe it is an album by John Lennon called John Lennon /Plastic Ono Band :)

Reminds me of the speculation over Led Zeppelin’s 4th album’s name.

Anyone have any idea where the plastic comes from? I just assume it part of the concept band idea being able to change. That is is a changable creation. Anyone have any insights or quotes of the backing story or idea for name?

Yoko Ono reply to a Twitter question about it in 2010: “As I was asked to do a show in Berlin before John and I got together, I wanted to use four plastic stands with tape recorders in each one of them, as my band. I told that story to John, and he immediately coined the phrase PLASTIC ONO BAND.”

Nice cover post. I collect vinyl, going to be on look out for that. Was that only on the UK release?
