In some video I saw years ago, John was talking about his aunt whom he loved like a mother and whom he’d visit a lot. He enjoyed her company because she made him feel like the old days when he was a kid or something. Anyway, my questions are, what was her name? And secondly, he said she lived in some kind of government funded housing project. What was that called?

I’m coming here because I’m getting quite distressed about an idiot, Mark Harrison spoiling every single JL story on MSN with exactly the same comments and claims every story, which MSN either seem incapable or uninterested in taking down as hate speech. Basically it concerns John and supposed support for the IRA. The claims made are frankly ludicrous, you’ll get a taste here: John Lennon was ‘furious’ when restaurant played certain Beatle’s song (msn.com) . Can anyone clarify what actually happened? Yes, I know I shouldn’t perhaps read the output of conspiracy theory believing morons, but this guy seriously needs taking down.

Wow, some of those comments on that story are pretty ugly. Anyway the story is about Lennon supposedly getting angry that the restaurant was playing Yesterday — I’m not sure what Yesterday has to do with the IRA. And the story alludes to the notorious alleged rivalry between John and Paul, but Paul himself got into hot water for supposedly being pro-IRA (early 70s with his song Give Ireland Back to the Irish, his argument being he wasn’t necessarily pro IRA he was just pro Irish independence)

@Old Soak, here’s a link that you may find helpful:
Lennon did not give cash to IRA, says Yoko
Yoko Ono, widow of the former Beatle John Lennon , has been quick to deny reports that her late husband helped fund the IRA. That was not true, she said, but he did send money to Ireland.
Ono said the musician sent money to many countries, including Ireland, but that it was intended for “children, orphans and women in need.”
At an exhibition of her art works in the northern Spanish city of Zaragoza, she said: “My husband did not give money to the IRA. My husband gave money… when it was asked for by people who were in need.”
Regarding the article called ‘John Lennon was “furious” when restaurant played certain Beatle’s song’, let’s look at some examples from the text:
However, Lennon grew disdainful of how talented McCartney was behind the scenes. The Beatles star’s assistant, Dan Richter, recently opened up about the two creatives’ differences. He said McCartney was always Lennon’s “biggest rival”. He went on: “It bugged him that Paul could write those sweet melodies like Yesterday and Hey Jude . He couldn’t do that. He was just too acerbic, or too intelligent…”
In fact, John could and did write a number of stylish “sweet melodies”, such as: Do You Want To Know A Secret , Ask Me Why , I’ll Be Back , You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away , In My Life , Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds , Dear Prudence , Julia , Good Night , Love, Imagine , Jealous Guy , Oh My Love, Woman , (Just Like) Starting Over, Beautiful Boy.
This bitterness between the two songwriters even bled into Lennon’s social life, Richter recalled. On one occasion, the singer found himself being assaulted by his band’s music in public – but not the music he wanted.
Richter laughed while recalling a trip to a “fancy restaurant that had a band”. He said: “When they saw John come in they started playing Yesterday . John was so p****d off!”
Lennon even spoke out about this instance in one interview back in 1980 while talking to journalist David Sheff. He was asked about hearing his music being played in public, and he replied: “I’m always proud and pleased when people do my songs. It gives me pleasure that they even attempt to do them, because a lot of my songs aren’t that doable.” He added: “I go to restaurants and the groups always play Yesterday . [His wife] Yoko [Ono] and I even signed a guy’s violin in Spain after he played us Yesterday . He couldn’t understand that I didn’t write the song. But I guess he couldn’t have gone from table to table playing I Am The Walrus .”
Behind the scenes, however, it was a different story. Lennon’s assistant, Richter, even recalled the star getting so frustrated by the rivalry in his own home he made a request of his staff. Richter said: “John got somebody to make a list of all the Beatles’ songs and then we had to say which were his and which were Paul’s.”
Both John and Paul have understandably expressed frustration at times about that subject. Paul later wanted to reverse the songwriting credit to McCartney–Lennon for Yesterday and some other songs; and John might have been agreeable to this as it could have helped to alleviate some of the frustration for both John and Paul.
Lennon and McCartney’s feud grew into a painstaking fury when The Beatles split up in 1970. McCartney looked back on his relationship with his lifelong friend in his recently released book, The Lyrics: 1956 To The Present.
He wrote: “When we broke up and everyone was now flailing around, John turned nasty. I don’t really understand why. Maybe because we grew up in Liverpool, where it was always good to get in the first punch of a fight.”
Paul wrote and published the song Too Many People , and John responded – but perhaps more aggressively than Paul had expected. Looking back, this episode doesn’t seem that important: of course people have occasional rows, and the media often like to sensationalise.
Ringo’s quote comes to mind: “It was magical. I mean, there were really some loving, caring moments between four people. A really amazing closeness, with four guys who really loved each other. It was pretty sensational.”
Although McCartney’s final conversation with Lennon wasn’t a groundbreaking look into their psyches or relationship, the star confessed he wouldn’t change anything about it.
He added: “It was really nice and I was so glad that we got back to that relationship that we’d always had when we were kids. We’d lived in each other’s pockets for so long that it was great to get back to that.”
Yes, at least the writer ended the article in an amicable manner.

I have a question about Alfred and his treatment of Julia – was he ever abusive to her in any way? I know John said in an interview I can’t remember right now that he would see Julia ‘s face all bloody, and I’m pretty shocked that for some reason this barely gets mentioned, or at least I’ve rarely seen people discuss it. I think I’ve heard a few other claims here and there that Alfred would hit Julia , but again it’s not really expanded upon. If it’s true though that’s really sad, John’s childhood might be even worse than I thought. I know he would go running to Mimi’s house at night crying and she would take him back home and argue with Julia – I wonder just how bad things could get at home.
And was Bobby Dykins ever abusive to Julia too? I know Julia Baird and Jackie don’t think very highly of Mimi but admittedly I don’t know much about their opinions on him. Have they ever commented on how he would treat her?

Beatles Bible on Twitter tweeted this to-do list from John to his assistant in 1980. Can anyone read the complete entry for #4? All I can see is: “Marmalade (enuff jam for…” Can anyone decipher the rest on that line?
22 May 1980:
John Lennon writes a to-do list for his assistant Fred Seaman.
"Would it be a good idea to make sure BOTH CARS have full GAS TANKS?"
It is auctioned in 2011 for $16,696!

@Sea Belt Here is a newspaper article that includes a copy of the entire list. I think the line about the marmalade is referring to NOAHS bagels, which I Believe was popular in NY around that time.

@sigh butterfly — Thanks, the mystery is getting closer to solution. I still wonder what those two words are after “NOAHS”… Certainly doesn’t look like “bagel” — perhaps some other baked good?

Does it read “enuff jam for NOAHS ark already”? (The “r” of “ark” seems to match the “r” in “Yesterday “, and the “k” approximately matches the “k” in “talking”.)
John may have been emphasising in his own way that he wanted marmalade rather than jam as they already had plenty of jam.

So.
After some random cyber-sleuthing to figure out exactly when Yoko was pregnant with Sean, I came across these little nuggets that somehow seem to still exist, from an online Newsgroup in 1994:
“From: (MPang)
Date: 2 Jul 1994 15:43:01 -0400
(Brett Pasternack) writes:
“I just checked two Lennon bios–Jon Weiner’s excellent “Come Together ” and Anthony Fawcett’s “One Day At A Time”–and both seem to agree that John moved back in with Yoko in mid-January, 1975. Which would mean that Sean was not necessarily premature.”
Anthony Fawcett was once John & Yoko’s ass’t. He stole some clothes from John after he was fired by them and then he tried to sell it back to them. When John saw Anthony in LA, John grabbed him by the balls and was not too pleased to see him. I remembered when he wrote about John’s LA time, I thought to myself, he wasn’t there with us except for the one incident. How would both authors know when John left except for me. John and I were together in Florida with Julian for Xmas. We then saw Bowie during the Young American LP in January. I’ve known over the years that most info were obtained through interviews I’ve given before and after my book (ie recordings, Phil Spector) No one even knew of such incidences until I mentioned them in interviews.
For the record, how did the rumor start that John and Yoko got back together after the Elton concert in November? And more specifically, that it was the 1st time that they had seen each other since their split. Not quite.
This may be petty but it is my life under a microscope. Put yourself in my shoes.
May Pang”
After she was corrected, she said:
“Date: 6 Jul 1994 01:04:03 -0400
Thank you all for clearing up the rumor. But I think this time John got his date wrong. He didn’t return to the Dakota until the 1st week of February.
Elton did not arrange for the tickets although I wouldn’t be surprised if his office took care of our request. John and I asked Tony King (Gen. Mgr. for Apple) to make sure Yoko had tickets because she wanted them after WE TOLD her of John’s upcoming appearance. She even mentioned to Tony King where she wanted to sit in the audience. Also, John & Elton were each given a single flower corsage before the show by Yoko. In fact, in some photos you can see it on John. My point is the only people surprised at John’s appearance was the audience.
Food for thought…..If John & Yoko got back together after the Elton Show then how is it possible that John & I went to Orlando (DisneyWorld) with Julian for Xmas of 1974. I was also with John when “Fame” was created in January 1975. My book does give the chronological order of our life and it was NEVER challenged or disputed.
I think enough has been said of this matter.
May Pang”
Can anyone make heads or tails of this? With the passage of time, do we know how much of this checks out?
