Im new to the beatlesbible and I love Julian a ton. (Like legit i think ik too much about him i mean ive listened to all his albums and watched and read all the interviews.) I wanted to make a thread for him. (I think this is how it works) But yeah Julian is incredibly talented (just like his father, mother, and half-brother.)

Welcome, @StarEmblem. For you…a white feather.

I did a search for all the threads we have that have Julian as part of the title. This link should take you to the list of threads. Enjoy reading those pots if you haven’t seen them yet. https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..;include=2

I like having this all-encompassing thread. Should we bring some of the posts in other threads here. Hmmmmmm. What to do? What to do? I will ask the other mods.

Me too john-lennon-salute_gif(I’m Coltrane from the Discord by the way)

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I think its time to revive this. Question to everyone! Im curious to hear your guys’ opinion on Julian as a whole. If you asked me i would have told you, deep down Julian is a great person, kind, sweet, loving, and a great songwriter and photographer. His humanitarian work is great and really thats probably what John would have wanted. Julian has always says his parents are his biggest inspirations in many different ways. Without John, Julian wouldnt be making music today. John’s white feather message as we know spoke to Julian (he at first thought it was weird to have John say that but hey that message will return in the future to him.) Cynthia did an amazing job providing for her son and making sure he was happy throughout his life up until her death in 2015. John told Julian when he was getting ready to venture into music is “Do it, But don’t blame me.” John and Julians relationship is a whole other can of worms i will post later. But anyways im curious! Go and post your opinion!

I am personally reluctant to take that much interest in the musical work of the Beatlekids, since I would rather spend my time listening to musicians who have gained their success based on their own musical merits, not the success of their parents. That’s not to say they’re not talented or capable of making good music, but on principle it is not something I am disposed to trying. I have listened to a few of Julian’s tracks, and have mostly heard decent singer-songwriter music in the style of John’s solo work. ‘Too Late for Goodbyes’ is not a song I enjoy much at all, with its weirdly bouncy reggae – ish rhythm and pretty weak lyrics. His voice doesn’t really have the strength of range of John’s, either. ‘Valotte’ is much better.

That said, I have a lot of respect for his honesty towards his relationship with John, and his bravery to go against the tide of opinion following John’s death.

I understand where you’re coming from, but for me personally, with the way I introduce myself to new music, it’s not terribly different to getting into something because the artist had some kind of social or artistic relation or association with one of my current favourite artists, e.g. Eric Clapton was George’s best mate, maybe I should check out Eric’s stuff*. At the end of the day, if I like, say, Dhani’s music, I like it on its own merits and not because he’s Hari’s son (though it helps that his voice and certain musical sensibilities do resemble George’s, because those are sounds that I like).

Anyway, sorry to derail this thread, continue discussing Julian… can’t say I’ve explored his stuff much so I’ve no comment.

I suppose, but then again you are doing that with the knowledge that Clapton was one of the most significant musicians of the era. He was famous on his own merit before he met George, whereas I don’t think many of the Beatlekids would have risen to fame without their parentage.

On Julian though, I have played ‘Saltwater’ a few times over the last couple of days. It’s a worthy successor to John’s protest songs.

I would suggest this album to everyone! Its Photograph Smile, Julian had always said this and Everything Changes were his favorite albums he has ever made. Julian was very happy and content with his life during this time. This was around 1998/1999, he came back to music after a 5 year hiatus. He was engaged at this time to a girl named Lucy Bayliss (she is not Lucy in the sky btw) she is a model and she even managed Julians wesbite during its early days. Cyn had one of her first exhibitions of her artwork, Julian and Lucy attended. Those two were also at Paul’s Rock and Roll induction. He dedicated the opening track ‘Day After Day’ to his ex-girlfriend Olivia d’Abo (who Julian also engaged years prior but she broke it off due to Julian being so busy with music.) Julian has also dedicated two songs off this album to his fiancée Lucy, those songs are Kiss Beyond the Catcher and Way to Your Heart. Julian has always said he was super close to George Harrison during this time. (Julian specifically said in George’s later life he became so close to him frequently visiting Friar Park whenever he was in England.) George has done quite a bit in Julian’s life. Being the biggest supporter of Julian’s music, George had attended several of Julian’s shows. George became a massive influence to Julians later music (Jules introduced slide guitar and the usage of sitar in his later work.) George had even played the guitar solo on Saltwater, although he isn’t credited. Anyways im derailing my own thread. Imagine derailing your own thread.

My problem with Julian is that he often like sounds like a mid-’70s John tribute act. He got away with on Valotte because of the shock value, but then it becomes a case of diminishing returns. And then there’s the often whiney “I should have been treated better” statements which often mislead.

For instance, he’ll mention he has no income from John’s songs while Sean does, but not mention that he did, and sold it, or complain about having to “buy back his heritage” because of Yoko when she hasn’t done the big auction of John’s belongings, and most of what Julian has bought on the auction market, including instruments, were given away as gifts by a still-alive John…

Sorry. a-hard-days-night-paul-10 I wish I could like him more. He was the first out of the traps and has often handled being Beatle Child #1 very badly.

I agree, I mean I love Julian for other reasons. Julian i will admit is a bit too whiney for my liking (personally he should just get over himself sometimes good lord hes 56 and hes still whining over his father like a 2 year old.) Julian always said “Dads first family got nothing so I had to buy it back.” Julian plays it off like John/Yoko are horrible human beings. To this day Julian still believes the mindset that him and Cynthia after the divorce were broke and that she had to hold down 3 jobs just to support her and Julian. That isnt true because from the divorce settlement that money is supposed to last until Julian turned 21. Some of the narratives Julian plays off makes me turn my head slightly and say “uhhh.” For now Julian seems to have somewhat calmed down on the whiney part. Hes on good terms with Yoko and he was actually impressed on some of the recent stuff Yoko has done. Julian has also somewhat calmed down on John (although im not holding my breath), Julian recently appeared in a John & Yoko doc called “Above Us Only Sky” and was talking about the fond memories he had in Ascot. I will admit Julian’s music is a bit bland for me that’s why i tend to gravitate towards Seans music more for that uniqueness. It just feels like Julian doesnt have his own voice and he prefers to sound like others. Obviously he sounds heavily like John and personally I think thats on purpose. I pointed this out to Matt and others that on Mr. Jordan and a few songs off of Help Yourself, Julian started to take the David Bowie approach to much and basically sound like Bowie. I Get Up off of Mr. Jordan is another good one to bring up, to me it has like a weird Elvis vibe to it.
