Did anyone see this documentary about a portable jukebox that Lennon took on tour with The Beatles in the mid 60's? It was pretty good except I don't know why they interviewed Sting.
There is also a double CD that came out along with it...usually I wouldn't buy such a thing, but I was tempted because I liked the songs from the documentary. Not all the songs from the album are the exact performances that would have been on John's records, but it's a close approximation. I find myself listening to it quite a bit, and it really shows what he stole, mainly from black artists, to construct the early Beatles songs. He had really awesome taste in music.

He "borrowed" a lot from other artists. I'm surprised he wasn't sued before he was sued for "Come Together ." The riff from "I Feel Fine " was lifted (with a minor variation) straight from Bobby Parker's song, "Watch Your Step."

I remember it well. It was a South Bank Show special. I thought it was fascinating the way they hauled it around to play records on it to those who had made/written, and the reactions when they discovered John considered them important enough to include on his very early, and very bulky iPod. It was also interesting, especially with the American artists/songwriters, to hear them talk of the impact of The Beatles on what they were doing.
Sting? Yeah, that bit was hard to fathom.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm going to watch it on YouTube. I'm taking a history of rock music class, and we're encouraged to look at outside sources, so this firmly counts as homework and not procrastination. :->

I remembered reading an interesting blog on the subject a while back. Had to hunt for it, but worth a read.

Thanks. That was an interesting read, and the list on there will help me track down some of the other songs.

This documentary about Lennon's jukebox contents gives some insight into the music he liked to listen to. Ron's post above contains some interesting insight. Happily, my fav Donovan song is included.
