I’m thinking this is John’s best vocal. It has power and vulnerability. It’s awesome how he really emphasised each thing he didn’t believe in, making it feel like a definitive statement, rather than having the flow of a typical rock song.

@Timothy, should this be in the ‘God ‘ song thread as that’s where he is emphasising what he didn’t believe in? ‘Mother ‘ is more on the abandonment of his parents and not being held as some kind of role model for how he dealt with that.

Ha, yes. I’ve posted in the wrong thread for some reason. Mother is an awesome song though, and just as good.

Yet i think Mother is a superior vocal performance

“mama don’t go, daddy come home” is just so raw. At its core its a completely unfiltered expression of his trauma, the truthfulness and pain of his vocals have never been equalled.

I like God a bit better as a song, but Mother ‘s one of John’s finest performances, if not his finest

Though, for raw vocals, you have to throw Cold Turkey  and Yer Blues into the mix, studio or live.
