maybe my favourite Beatles solo song
It’s very good and works well as an anthem. Mainstream, catchy and doesn’t really feel dated.
that, plus it has the right amount of aggression/energy and the drums sound incredible when you crank it

Really enjoyed that. I’m addicted to demo stuff from John particularly. Made listening to the final version even more satisfying after you hear all the different take attempts.

Always great hearing how they worked things up. White evolving the drum fills. Lennon his vocals.
Unless Paul McCartney knocks on my door I am unlikely to be impressed.

Love the clarity of this version, and it’s great to watch along. A top five solo John song.

Gotta admit when I was younger I thought John was singing “you say karma’s gonna get you.”

It’s probably the first time it’s sounded good.

I remember hearing that mix for the first time and thinking “oh, you can actually hear the bass on this mix!”

“Why in the world are we here? Surely not to live in pain and fear” is my favourite lyric in the song, and I particularly relate to that idea now. John’s Plastic Ono era stuff particularly is pure thought and feeling put to music, with the message remaining firm and clear. He had passion for what he was singing as he believed it, and that came across.
Nobody lives forever. But we all shine on.

Written and recorded in about a day right? I think the less time he spent on an idea the better it was.

Indeed. It was straight after the Beatles and that was such a perfect time for angst and creativity. As well as leftover ideas he was working on. I don’t dislike Mind Games or Walls And Bridges , but he was fulfilling the recording contract obligation, and could have very easily retired after Rock N Roll.
