Since this thread is here I’ll comment. I’ve found comfort in Dear John during times of trouble. The simplicity of “don’t be hard on yourself, give yourself a break” does a lot.

Dear John dates from early November 1980, @Trlj; a song called You Saved My Soul, with a demo dated 14 November 1980, is believed to be the last song John wrote.
As Holey said, John was still working on studio recordings up until the day of his death, and is correct that the last thing John recorded was his guitar overdub on Yoko’s Walking on Thin Ice, but if looking for his final composition, that’s You Saved My Soul.
