As noted in my post – Double Fantasy and Milk And Honey ; I personally prefer New York over those two – much too ‘syrupy’ for mine 😉
I like John’s songs on those two albums, but I’m not a fan of the Yoko songs.

I like John & Yoko’s songs (and vocal work) on City, and some of the songs just rock – so I prefer it overall compared to those other two. At times I have to make allowance for some of the simplistic lyrics to do so.

Fr. George was a priest who was ‘listener, counsellor and healer’
The Some Time In New York City bit from the article:
Mourners were told that while in the U.S. in his youth, Fr. Hasson was shown John Lennon ’s protest record featuring ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’.
He said: “It was John Lennon ’s response to the events of January 1972 in Derry. The lyrics were printed on the cover and there too was a photograph, the subject was a protest march in Dungiven with 13 people carrying white crosses walked to the police barracks and placed them there. And leading the march was Fr. George Doherty. Imagine a priest of the Derry diocese was chosen to grace a John Lennon protest LP!
The picture is actually by the lyrics for The Luck Of The Irish. It is on the back cover of the album.

I know I’m a bit late to the party, but I only recently acquired the Signature Box. Some Time In New York City was the only major Lennon album I had not heard (as a whole), though I knew WITNOTW as well as Attica State and Luck of the Irish from the Anthology Box. I knew more or less what to expect – that the album is more political and musically lacking – it’s not as terrible as I had imagined. (I still haven’t heard Unfinished 1, 2 or Wedding Album and have no real desire to.)
To my ears, John’s poor songs are somehow lifted up by Yoko’s songs. The best surprise on the album for me was Sisters, O Sisters. Love the Spector sound, straight from the early 60’s. We’re All Water is pretty good too!
The Live Jam disc leaves a lot to be desired though. Zappa’s title for Au – “A Small Eternity with Yoko Ono” – is very appropriate! It’s pretty difficult to listen to, and I just can’t help what John must have been thinking around this time. Did *he* even really like to listen to the screeching?
All in all, when I need my Lennon fix I won’t be reaching for Some Time, but I am glad to finally own and hear it. It chronicles an obviously important time in John’s life, though imo it is the nadir of his songwriting career.

Woman Is the N—r of the world is one of my favorite songs by John, but as a whole the album doesn’t compare to his best work like Plastic Ono Band, Imagine , Mind Games , Walls And Bridges and Double Fantasy .
We’re All Water has to be one of the worst songs John made aside from say, Cambridge 1969. I get the message, but the song is so bad.

This album is very underrated, in my opinion… The L.P.’s title perhaps sums it up best for John & Yoko DID, in fact, capture the Spirit of The Times in the City that they had declared Home for themselves… No small achievement, but it’s at the “street level” that this album wears its heart on its sleeve that I’ve come to appreciate… How about this little heard Gem of a Classic?!:
There’s many influences here unheralded, such as their connection to David Peel & The Lower East Side… How many of you are familiar with this little known John & Yoko guest appearance:
Must’ve been heartwarming for John & Yoko to feel so welcomed to NYC, considering that the powers that be were scheming to have them deported… Check out this, another forgotten relic:
another notable influence was undoubtedly Jerry Rubin… ‘Power To The People ‘ would’ve made an excellent opener to this album… The Bonus Live album is gravy… recommend giving it another spin to those who haven’t for awhile…:-)

i went on after wildlife and some singles in my chronological listening i moved on to this album here. Some Time In New York City was hard to get through. there are good songs here but it’s hard for me to listen to yoko’s singing. i’m not gonna review the individual tracks with this one because i really do not want to go through the album a second time. the live stuff was the absolute hardest for me to get through. one track was 16 minutes of yoko screaming. i don’t understand the streaming stuff at all. john liked her screaming and that’s fine, but i can’t get into it. it’s too hard. i couldn’t even finish the second last track of it, i clicked off and retreated back to the comfort of ram. if you like this album i am not gonna knock you on it but i couldn’t get into it. maybe one day i will try to give it a second chance. but for now, onto red rose speedway.

What goes through your mind when you hear her voice?
to be honest? discomfort and fear.
Interesting, Fear of what? Does the fear arise merely from the sound of her voice, or because of what she represents to you?
