I think it depends if, at some stage, we get a Deluxe covering the Double Fantasy /Milk And Honey  sessions, @William Shears Campbell. I would think that would include a Home Demos disc or two. There’s a lot of good stuff on the 7-disc Home Demos ’75-’80 bootleg for it not to be revisited.

It should also be remembered that a slightly less profane alternate demo was included on the Homes Tapes disc that came with the Signature Box in 2010, which would seem to suggest it was still considered fine as a bit of a naughty interlude in 2010.

I’m familiar with the version of “Serve Yourself ” on the Signature Box.  I was talking about this specific take on the John Lennon Anthology(JLA), and specifically the JLA not being reissued.  I don’t doubt that more John Lennon demos and takes will be released(they did just come out with a big box last year), or even that we might see other versions of “Serve Yourself “.  However this specific take along with the JLA might be forever stuck in 1998 in the world of the John Lennon commercial catalog.

Demos like that are why I love John so much. Wasn’t intended for release but his personality is on full show.

That may be true but it damages the cloudlike, dreamy image that they like to have for John, and then also what mmm said, so they’re not gonna reissue it.  It’s great if you can get a hold of an older copy of the JLA though.

Wouldn’t do any harm to portray another true side of John than the peaceful-man-on-piano-signing-Imagine –but-was-a-true-revolutionary-too-guy they love to put forward as if they don’t someone some of the other stuff will be thrown out by others. John always admitted his faults and failings and was willing to address them openly, it’s what made him very relatable.

Eventually, we will see more of the home demos which deserve to be heard by more than those who go delving but who knows when. Yoko and co seem stuck on ‘Imagine ‘ so might see the 100-year anniversary release before any other album is glimpsed at.

Is that the bonus disc in the ‘Signature’ box that contained all the studio albums? I ignored that as the cost to get the new material was way too high.

Yeah there were 2 bonus disc’s.  The first is 6 non album singles, and the second is a few home demos.

Two discs when no doubt one would have been enough.

Can’t remember what’s on it, I don’t have it, but ‘Acoustic’ had a handful of previously unreleased demos mixed in with demos on the ‘Anthology’ box. I never bought it as it was always going for something like £16.

I listen to Anthology as much as anything. Listening to it right now. Move Over Ms. L is so catchy and the lyrics are fantastic.

I agree about the two disc comment.

I’ve got Anthology & Acoustic and find there aren’t enough hidden gems in it for me.  Rarely if ever, do I play them.

Why would two discs have been enough when there is obviously an incredible wealth of Lennon demos out there?

I see (hear) this box set as illustrating “The Many Faces and Voices of John Lennon “. From tender romantic to caustic iconoclast, these recordings prove there were many sides of him. Some of the alternate studio takes are rollicking (Nobody Told Me, I Don’t Wanna Face It, unvarnished Rock ‘n ‘Roll sessions). The lo-fi home tapes remind me of early childhood. My dad was an amateur musician, and the home recordings, some of the including very young Sean Ono Lennon, are quite evocative of what it’s like to grow up with a musician in the house.

Love the Dylan satires. “Lordy, lordy, lordy, take this makeup off of me… I’m stuck inside a lexicon with a Roget’s Thesaurus blues again”. With high regard and fondness for Bob D., no one should be above intelligent satire.

The live tracks on the NYC disc are a time capsule… the Attica State benefit, the applause when Lennon gets to “Rockefeller pulled the trigger: that is what the people feel”… raises shivers, feeling the electricity of the moment decades later.

Also: Hey, I’m Ian… I’ve been lurking a while but this is my first forum post. Lovely to find a Beatles forum like this; here’s to many fruitful conversations ahead!

~Om Shanti.

Wondering if anyone has seen a pdf version of the JLA booklet? My searches have been fruitless. Thanks in advance.
