Is John Lennon a chameleon?

I can’t help to notice, looking at some avatars we use, that John have some kind of chamaleonic face. What I mean is through the years, hair styles and even some face expressions, he seem to be not the same man. What do you think? do you agree? do I need to go to an  ophthalmologist? or better go to a psychiatrist?

I'd like to say "thank you" on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.

No, no, the doctors can stay out of it this time!
a-hard-days-night-george-8 I agree with you!

When I think of John, it’s kind of in quarters. 1st is his Teenage/Hamburg years, rebellion to the max. 2nd, his Beatle years and the John that’s nearest and dearest to my heart. (Not that I like him any less beforehand or after! Just… the John I know.) 3rd, Yoko invasion! Corruption of his mind nad heart and how he changed into the John the world knows him as- peace lover, peace keeper, peace advocate. Peace crazy! Last but not least, 4th quarter John. Homebody John, end of John. God , that sounds horrible.

But, yes Marcelo- I do agree. Out of the 4, he made the most obvious changes. The others did as well, but seemed to have kept some constants.

His drug use certainly seemed to reflect in his face. He complained about his ‘fat Elvis’ period, but he looked healthier then than when he was on heroin.

No, I think you are right. But I have seen people’s faces changing a lot. When my nephew was a child, my Mom used to call him “Cocorrito” (after my sister’s name), but now he looks identical to his Dad. So I guess John was the same.

Also weight can change you a lot….

Alissa, thanks so much for sharing this.  It actually dove-tails into some things I’ve been thinking about my “relationship” with John over the years.  It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who makes these kinds of mental divisions/compartmentalizations.

The question I’m interested in (which hopefully doesn’t take us too far a-field from the thread topic) is this: which “John” do you think was most fully the “authentic John”?

Oh, I know, people are multi-faceted and not at all one-dimensional.  But I know John himself thought of those “mop-top years” as being a joke, a facade, not really the real him.  Or was it?  Was he really being any more true to himself by staging bed-ins and climbing into a bag?  Ah, or was he most fully John when he was playing the role of house-wife, taking care of Sean?

Not a bit like Cagney.

Well, I always like to think of John as a mop-top even though he says it was all an act. But the way he acted, with his wit and such, reflected his writings in In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, which he was always proud of I think. He was always a humorous person – humour was a major part of his personality – so his mop-top years probably weren’t all just a charade.

When I see at the photos on the biography by Philip Norman, the 40 years old John seems younger than the 20 years old. Odd.

A very interesting topic.

In perusing several books on the Four, I could not help notice the same thing about the many faces of John. We all have things that change about our faces as we age and/or go through weight changes. John seemed to go through various weight changes at various stages in his life making for some interesting photos.

The photo that I use for my avatar was chosen because Cynthia called it her favorite of all photos taken of John. I find it very hard to disagree.

I totally agree. The Sgt Pepper John was like a completely different person from the White Album John. I think whatever his look was, he was always authentic to some extent.

By the way, I also really like that picture Zig. I’ve actually never seen it before, but I see why Cynthia (and you) would like it.

I now declare this bridge open!

Maybe he was happier without the Beatlemania on him. I’ve noticed that when people are happier, they look younger.

And about who’s the authentic John.. I dunno… I always think of him that he was a musician and a composer and a singer. I think that’s the real John… but isn’t this a cliché answer? a-hard-days-night-john-6

I’m glad as well that someone is on the same boat! Is it a hinderance though? I’m not too sure; sometimes I think it is. Because I think of him in divisions, I often wonder, “do I even like the real him, then, if I loke one “John” better than another?” Geez! Stressful, especially regarding a hero you love so much. Ah well, he’s John, and I love any John.

It’s been a dead thread for four years but I’ll try to resuscitate it. Yes, his appearance changed a lot, but what strikes me the most is the way his expression changed. I know many people believe Yoko Ono was a good influence on him but when she appears in his life he seems to be angry most of the time (look at his nostrils, for instance); the same with the peace crusader and the heroin addict. He seemed to be at peace with himself again in his last years.

Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit” (“Perhaps one day it will be a pleasure to look back on even this”; Virgil, The Aeneid, Book 1, line 203, where Aeneas says this to his men after the shipwreck that put them on the shores of Africa)

Maybe that site was/is correct and all the Beatles were replaced a number of times – or never even existed. Maybe the people we are seeing who are perpetuated to be members of the Beatles are just random people who all look similar to four specific individuals randomly chosen at a specific time in existence by higher powers in society.

Interestingly, the John that I got introduced to was the post-Beatles John through youtube videos of his interviews. Naturally, the first impression that I had of him was of an angry man due to his stern look and cutting remarks (this was his interview with Dick Cavett). I was very surprised to see his jovial side when I youtubed the fab four concerts. And it strains me to look for light-heartedness in post-Beatles John beneath his rough facial expressions. And if this is what we feel as onlookers, I can’t imagine what ride must John have been on that brought about in him such a 180 degree shift. Oh John!heart

He is definitely a chameleon. If a person who doesn’t know John Lennon looks at John in 1960 and John in 1980, like my brother, he’ll not be able to make out its the same person.
