'Imagine' ...a reason to kill?

It is possible – and I dont think I’m alone in thinking this,  that one reason John was shot dead was because of the lyrics to ‘Imagine ‘.   In his unhinged irrational mind, Mark Chapman saw him as a nasty hypocrite singing about ‘sharing all the world’ no need for greed or hunger and denouncing  possessions while himself leading a life of wealth and fame.  I do remember reading some time in the early 80s that  prior to his death , John & Yoko were looking to invest in property in Manhattan and places like Hawaii.   He certainly didn’t have his head in the clouds…

Sure it’s possible, but I don’t think anyone truly knows the motives behind it other than the guy himself.

He says something to that effect in this interview.

How about we don’t give this asshole the publicity and fame he wanted when he murdered John. He got his notoriety but I’d rather he wasn’t given the space to air what he had/has to say on here.

It’s a bad overrated song but it isn’t kill worthy.

I disagree but that’s a subject for another thread a-hard-days-night-john-3

I love The Beatles Bible and certainly don’t want to check in here to see that awful excuse for a person in this space. As to the “why,” I agree with meanmistermustard.

This song wasn’t a reason, tbh. It was an excuse, John did nothing to warrant this action.

I’m not saying it was a justified reason, but it was HIS reason for killing John. I actually thought that interview was interesting in psychological perspective. The way he tells the story so matter of fact is so weird and a bit disturbing. I do agree that this could easily have been his reason for killing John.

His main reason for killing John was to get fame; Chapman was a loser who felt he’d done nothing with his life and came to the conclusion that murdering someone famous would make his name live on. There will be other reasons (John sold out, John was a fake, John had no security around him) but everything else is immaterial as we sit here and give him what he wanted. As soon as folk realise they are granting his ultimate desire by giving him threads, column inches, tv interviews etc then maybe they’ll stop discussing him and hopefully one day he’ll vanish into old web pages that few read.

Exactly. IMO, there is little doubt that this POS, Manson, Oswald… were all driven by the desire to gain fame/notoriety. Frustrated losers looking for a quick fix to elevate them out of obscurity. Sad but true.

I hate this guy. He wanted to release a statement on the 10th anniversary of John’s death. As if he wants to figurenout to most tactful way to get exposure for what he did. Its almost like he is celebrating it as a holiday.

I could only watch about 3 minutes in and had to stop (Actually I only listened, I couldn’t look at the guy XD). Amazing how he gets over 40 minutes of air-time. Makes me a bit sick.

I may be in the minority here and might get some hate for saying this but i think that Mark should be released from prison. Don’t get me wrong, killing John Lennon was a horrific thing but he’s served nearly double of his time, has behaved in prison, and shows remorse over his actions, making it very clear that he wouldn’t do a crime like this again. As much as i respect that this was a horrible crime, i also believe that keeping this man in prison shows how hard it is for society to forgive people who have done horrendous crimes. I hope that Mark gets paroled and that Yoko can find it in her heart to forgive him and if he does a Lionel Tate and violates that parole, he goes back to prison.

I respect your opinion and I agree, it’s been almost 40 years. Despite the hurt he caused. It can’t go forever. If he ever violates parole like you said, back in he goes.

Regarding whether Imagine had any influence on MDC I think it may have done. He also read a magazine article which was critical of John’s wealthy lifestyle.

What do you think about movie Chapter 27, where the director explains his vision of why Chapman killed John?

Hi Sandra, could you elaborate? I never heard of this movie Chapter 27?

In agreement that there should be no space here, or anywhere for that matter, for those who’ve taken lives…  even if their motivations aren’t motivated “by the desire to gain fame/notoriety”…  The trouble is, we have a “grey area” here in regards to the murderer who produced The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be ‘ album, not to mention ‘Imagine ‘…  I was (guess I still am!) a fan of his work, especially the ‘Let It Be ‘ album which I still rate as THE definitive version, but he really is no better than the other unmentionables being discussed here…

I also watched it. But I think it’s only a vision of a director.

But you can google and watch it. It’s kinda arthaus movie
