Does anyone have any general opinions about John and Yoko’s films?
I saw Apotheosis, Fly, Two Virgins , Erection, and Up Your Legs Forever last night.
They definitely have a mind altering effect on the viewer. Up Your Legs Forever especially put me into a kind of trance state where my perception was altered…I don’t want to say that it “put me to sleep” exactly, because it wasn’t boring. It was more the images and the camera work.
Don’t want to say more because I don’t want to spoil anything. I hate it when authors, critics or others give away details of movies.

The infamous Bottoms (which is actually called Four) is on YouTube, along with a couple of others (which I’ll try and sort links for).

When I see Bottoms, I am always reminded of the magnificent A Thousand Feet of Film by Ron Nasty (who!?! who!?!) and Chasity from The Rutles’ All You Need is Cash.

I haven’t watched any of them, to be honest. Did you view on YouTube? No, I ordered a 2 DVD set from someone on eBay.
Jeez how much did you spend on them? Never really liked John and Yoko’s videos but then that kind of “art” never really interested me. Still on the lookout for “Self Portrait” though

“Bottoms” is actually a sequel to “Four”. “Four” was filmed in ’66 and had 15 arses, “Bottoms” was filmed in ’67 and had 364 arses

It was 25 dollars. There are several other films besides the ones I watched yesterday.

Yes, I did, and I will probably make my wife watch it as well. It was one of my favorites.

What about Rape where they follow some woman about without her knowing. That premise alone scares makes me feel sick and uneasy. Never seen any of them and no plan to. I saw Fly is also on Youtube but the the quality sucks.

Why?

Erection is a 20 minute movie, of a camera filming footage of a building being built over a 2 year period in slow motion. Very riveting stuff!
And MMM don’t worry the girl in "Rape" was an actress 🙂

Rape is actually, in this modern age of celebrity culture, and how somebody becomes a celebrity, and their own complicity, a very interesting film. From memory, and I’m not checking this against books if anyone wants to contradict, the woman involved at first threatened to sue, and then changed her story to being an actress involved in the whole conceit of the film.
Either she was an innocent who looked at legal and saw she couldn’t win, or she was an actress who played a role even after the cameras were turned off by threatening to sue to give the impression she was an unwilling participant.
The question of complicity is an interesting one in this day and age.

Re Rape ive read that John and Yoko got the permission and all the info on the woman they filmed from her sister and the lady, whoever she was, had absolutely no idea. Would lose a lot of its edge if it did turn out to be an actress.
I totally agree with you mja that the film and its concept makes it one of the far more interesting concepts, especially in todays celebrity based reality tv guff land we live in. Its just the idea of filming someone without their knowledge to the point of terror and driving them to break down doesnt appeal to me.

I’ve seen “Fly”, or at least part of it…
FYI: I do a fabulous Yoko Ono impression. True story.

Toward the end of his life, John was a very enthusiastic fan of the very obscure avant-garde film-maker Alejandro Jodorowsky.
Jodorowsky, I read recently, is still alive, and is currently making a movie with an unusual cast, including Marilyn Manson.
Jodorowsky’s cinematic style is sort of like putting David Lynch, Werner Herzog and Harmony Korine all together in a blender.

I’ve seen ‘Fly’, which was interesting. The thought/idea behind some of their films fascinates me, but I haven’t been able to find many online. I’m quite into A-G stuff, from what I have seen or read, anyway.

John talks about the Rape film during his interview with Andy Peebles on the 6th December 1980, its 8:44 in and you can listen to it and the full interview on youtube (im currently reading the full interview transcript but cant find a copy online tho, anyone come across it?).
[Theres probably a load of sirens going off in some US Government Office as i type this as im typing the word ‘Rape’ and posting a link, albeit to youtube. May also be best for no-one to post the Self-Portrait film as Joe’s website will be blacklisted and whoever does will be banned for life.]
