Today being December 8th is a coincidence. In going through some memorabilia, I came across this letter sent to me years ago by a friend. He’d received this letter sent from jail. Chapman’s obviously found religion. The Christian Testimony he refers to at the bottom is a pamphlet in which he describes his emotional journey. I’ll post it when I have a moment to scan it. What a sad day. I’m looking at the Dakota. It’s cold and gray out – just like in our hearts.

Wow, it's been a while since a started a new topic. Like 2 months? Stupid streaking/drug-issue…
I for some reason put this topic into “All Together Now ” because it's the first thing I clicked and I'm too lazy to go back to put it in another thread-thingy. If Joe or Skye or whoever has a problem with it will move it.
Anyways, Mark Chapman's parole was postponed! Yay!
Comments, anyone?

Mark should not and likely will not be granted parole anytime soon which is obviously a great thing.
The murder itself is still puzzling to me in terms of his motivation and various other seemingly minor details that were ignored around the time that an investigation could have been launched. But, oh well, no use going back down that road again.

Ooh, that's harsh! I don't agree with that, I think a lifetime in prison is worse than the death penalty. Let Mark battle his demons for the rest of his life.

I read the news and to be honest, I truly feel bad for Yoko. Why does she have to go through this every time this happens?? I know she releases the same statetment every year. but geez.. can't we just leave him there for life and let Yoko alone?

I agree.
I'm in love, but I'm lazy.

I hope your kidding. I am EXTREMELY anti-war, anti-violence, and all that jazz. Otherwise known as a hippie. And so was John.
As Madi said, “You aren't a John Lennon fan if you want to kill Chapman.”

Except… I'm sure one of the reason he's being kept in prison is for his own safety. The authorities will be aware that some Beatles fan somewhere will be only too happy to hunt him down.
Incidentally, the parole hearing's been postponed until next month, pending additional reports. The outcome is still to be decided. I agree that it must be hard for Yoko to go through this every two years, but equally you can't infringe someone's human rights by denying them a hearing (even if you find their crime utterly abhorrent).

I've always struggled with the concept of the death penalty myself. Is it better to remove a cold-blooded killer from the planet or let them live with what they've done at the expense of the rest of society?
This DP issue for me is not just about Chapman – I know the debate over whether or not there was conspiracy is still alive and I do not want to start that here. I've said before in these pages that a better penalty would be to allow every Lennon fan to line up and whack him square in the grapes.
I can not imagine what any family goes through on a regular basis when their loved one's killer is up for parole. Having to relive that horror over and over again – opening up the wound and having to start healing again – has to be unbearable.
Like Sunii, I strongly oppose war and am a strong proponent of peace (not to the hippie degree). But I am still not 100% convinced that in certain cases the DP is a bad idea. I guess one does not know how they would reallly feel about it until it happens to their family. I hope I never have to find out.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

I do agree with the DP for “premeditated” which I believe this was. Why keep human gargage alive at the taxpayer's expence. I'm sure Chapman lives better than alot of folks that aren't in prison. 3 square meals a day and health care.
I don't agree that the parents should be blamed as I believe we should be accountable for our own actions.
just my two cents

Girl your such a liar! 😛 You've never streaked or did drugs. And I should know since I am your sister. 🙂
But anyway back to subject at hand
I'm glad he's still locked up. and I hope he never get's to come out.
Anyone who is crazy enough to kill another human being for any reason should be locked up for the rest of their life.

This isn't going to be a popular view, and I make no apologies for that.
I'm in favor of granting Chapman his release.
I blogged about it yesterday on my website, and my reasons are these:
1) Chapman has, by all accounts, been a model prisoner. He's not the twenty-five year-old mentally ill person that he was. He got the help that he needed and he has rehabilitated.
2) He was sentenced to twenty years to life. He has now served twenty-nine years.
3) New York State has no compelling interest in continuing to incarcerate him. Yes, Yoko Ono has stated, again, that she fears for her life and Sean's life, but there's no evidence that Chapman has any interest in them whatsoever — or that he would pose any danger to society.
4) Had Chapman killed anyone else on December 8, 1980, he would have been released a decade ago. Saying that “It was John Lennon and Lennon matters more” is a reason for denying parole is an appeal to emotion and it sets a standard that is both unfair and impossible-to-meet. Chapman is being held for political reasons that have more to do with thirty and forty years ago and nothing to do with today.
5) Chapman would, at fifty-five, fade back into the obscurity from whence he came if released. If not released, the world will continue to be reminded of his existence every two years when he comes up for parole yet again. If Beatledom truly wants to forget that he even existed, releasing him is the best thing. But if Beatledom wants to tear at the emotional wounds from now until who-knows-when, leave him behind bars.
I can see one viable reason for continuing to keep Chapman behind bars — it's the only way to ensure his safety. But is that really New York State's responsibility?
As I said, this is an unpopular and controversial view and I don't air it lightly. I don't expect that Chapman will walk free this year or even two years from now. But I think that, viewed objectively, releasing Chapman is the right thing — and the humane thing — to do.
