I just mentioned this song in the newly created thread asking for our favorite John Lennon vocals. I came here to post more thoughts about this tune and was more than mildly surprised that there was no discussion about it.

Confession time:

This song touches me deeply. The lyrics contain thoughts and words that I have said to my beautiful bride of 33+ years. Every time I hear it, without fail, I have to wipe away at least one tear. I remember, a few years ago, I posted a story about hearing this song over a PA system while shopping in a home improvement store. I can’t remember whether it was Lowe’s or Home Depot, but I digress. The bottom line is, I was openly singing along to it because I loved it and knew every line as if I’d written it myself. In my mind I had. Anyway, I think I may have hidden from sight behind a stack of lumber or a large potted plant or something, because I did not want anyone to see me weeping while I was singing.

“So let me tell you again and again and again – I love you, yeah, yeah – Now and forever”

Yeah…love this song. heart

Awwww @Zig, you’re a dear. heart

Even though I can’t personally relate to the song, John’s magic is such that I can feel an inkling of what he and you must feel, and it is truly beautiful.

I just saw the video for this on the 7-day John Lennon TV channel that’s broadcasting in the UK at the moment.

I was more than a little surprised that they used the notorious photo of dead John. I’ve only ever seen that online before, never in an official Lennon release (book, video etc).

It’s at the 2:41 mark. Consider yourself forewarned. It’s also got the photo of John signing Double Fantasy for Mark Chapman. They seem like odd choices for a sugary love song.

It’s the original 1981 official video, @Joe. Yoko wanted to make a statement about how she had lost the man who was singing about his love for her.

Thanks, good to know. I wasn’t sure if it was a more recent one – I’m often unsure whether Lennon videos are from that era or made years later (eg there’s a Cold Turkey one which has visuals from 1972, and that #9 Dream one where Yoko does the May Pang whispers).

I admire that John clearly loved Yoko with all his heart despite what others may think of her. I admire that without a hint of embarrassment he could express his feelings about her for the world to hear. But I’m afraid I find it terribly cloying and sickly sweet, really way over the top lyrics and syrupy arrangement for my ears. Sadly I don’t think this is a latter day classic. I’m sure many will disagree! Convince me I’m wrong please.

I think it’s difficult to write a song that’s simply about a pure devotion of love to a single person without it sounding schmaltzy to a wider audience. Perhaps it’s the same problem many of us have if we see couples canoodling in public.  Maybe it’s because we know John wrote this for Yoko, and we’re not Yoko so we don’t appreciate the sentiment, or perhaps you would express your affection for somebody differently.

I think its great, I really do.

It’s quite clear that the songs on ‘double fantasy’ were written about love and relationships when you are a bit more advanced in years and lived through a lot together. I think John had grown up a lot and his love for Yoko had evolved and you can really hear the honesty of the song shining through.

I remember my mum crying to it when it played on the radio after johns death, I was only 9 years old but it made a strong impression on me.
